Will the Minnesota Twins extend the contract of first baseman Justin Morneau? Not until at least August, according to Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. Miller reports that Morneau and his agent tried to approach the Twins' management about a possible contract extension last week, but the Twins said that they wanted to wait until after the July 31 trade deadline. Miller quoted Morneau as saying that Morneau wanted to see what interest the Twins have in bringing back the first baseman that has thrilled fans in the past but has had a tougher time staying healthy and performing up to his name and contract in the last few years. Said Morneau, “They said they want to see what happens at the trade deadline first. They haven’t ruled it out, but as of right now, it’s not something we’re discussing.” This may lead one to believe that Morneau is a trade candidate, but he has not come up seriously in any discussions. It does, though, open the possibility for Morneau to test free agency after the season. He is in the final year of a six-year, $80 million, and has nearly half of his $14 million for this year still to come. Morneau admits that "it will be tough to get something done" if the Twins wait until after the trade deadline to even begin discussions. He may feel that the Twins no longer want him, so free agency would look more appealing. “If you get within two months of becoming a free agent for the first time — I don’t want to speculate, but it would be hard to not want to see.” Morneau is a career .279/.349/.485 hitter with 211 home runs in 11 seasons. He has not played a full season since 2008 or hit 20 home runs or surpassed 80 RBI since 2009. MLB Trade Rumors' Steve Adams reminds us that the Twins have third base prospect Miguel Sano nearly ready for the Majors. That could push Trevor Plouffe more toward first base -- and Morneau more toward free agency, especially if no conversations occur before July 31. Follow Raymond on Twitter @RayBureau.
