Things have gone from bad to worse for a Detroit Tigers team expected by many to win the AL Central. The injuries are mounting, as are the losses - even against seemingly inferior competition.
The Tigers hope to avoid further embarrassment at home in Thursday's series finale with the major league-worst Minnesota Twins, who are trying to win consecutive games for just the second time all season.
Prior to Wednesday's two-game series opener against Minnesota (11-26), Detroit manager Jim Leyland announced closer Jose Valverde is day to day with a strained lower back. Leadoff hitter Austin Jackson joined Valverde with a day-to-day injury of his own after leaving Wednesday's 11-7 loss with a mild abdominal strain.
Jackson is batting .331 with five home runs and team highs of 10 doubles and 29 runs scored, while playing his usual solid defense in center field.
Infield defense proved Detroit's downfall in Wednesday's defeat, as the team committed four errors - one by each of the infielders. It overshadowed a strong game by the offense, as the Tigers (18-19) lost for the first time in eight games this season when scoring at least seven runs.
"You score seven runs, you have to win the game," Leyland said. "If you don't, you have problems."
Detroit has plenty of problems. The Tigers are 9-16 since their 9-3 start, and have fallen three games behind first-place Cleveland.
"I don't think anyone is pressing," first baseman Prince Fielder said. "That's what people always say when you are losing, but we're playing the same."
Fielder and Miguel Cabrera are both doing their best to get Detroit out of its slump. Fielder is batting .583 with three doubles and four RBIs in his last three games, while Cabrera is 10 for 20 with six RBIs in his last four.
The duo will try to continue its hot hitting and give scheduled starter Doug Fister (0-1, 0.54 ERA) some rare offensive support.
In two starts since returning from a left rib strain suffered in his April 7 season debut, Fister has yielded one run over 13 innings but has been backed by two total runs of support and the Tigers lost both times. The right-hander allowed one run and five hits Saturday while striking out eight in six innings of a 3-1 loss to Oakland.
Fister made one start against the Twins last season while with Detroit, permitting three hits over seven scoreless innings of a 2-1 victory on Sept. 11.
Minnesota has plated an AL-low 131 runs, but erupted for a season high Wednesday. Brian Dozier hit a three-run homer and the Twins pounded out 14 hits to win at Comerica Park for just the fourth time in 18 games.
Justin Morneau went 1 for 5 with a double in his first game back from a left wrist injury that landed him on the disabled list. He's 3 for 6 with a double lifetime off Fister, while Joe Mauer is hitless in 10 career at-bats against him.
The Twins, who last won back-to-back games April 11 and 12, counter with P.J. Walters (0-1, 3.00).
Recalled from the minors last Thursday to take the rotation spot of Francisco Liriano, Walters gave up one run - on a homer to Jose Bautista - and six hits in six innings of Saturday's 2-1 loss to Toronto. The right-hander struck out five and walked none in his fifth major league start, and first since 2010.
Walters made a relief appearance against Detroit for St. Louis in 2009, allowing a solo homer to Cabrera and one other hit in two innings.

Leyland surprised by Tigers' tailspin
Manager Jim Leyland's bench might be thin but his patience doesn't seem to be. Leyland expressed surprise Thursday that his club is two games below .500 and continues to flounder 38 games into the season. Detroit reached its low point by being swept by Minnesota, 4-3, and has lost five of its last seven outings. "The only thing that's been consistent is the...
The Waiver Wire: Andy Dirks
Detroit Tigers outfielder Andy Dirks has been on fire since being inserted into the lineup as a regular on April 26th and time may be running out to pick him up in any quality fantasy baseball league worth participating in this season.
Over the span of 15 games (13 games started), Dirks has gone 19-for-49 (.388 BA) with four doubles, a triple, three home runs, nine RBI and 10 runs...
Injury ends Austin Jackson's night early
DETROIT -- Austin Jackson left Wednesday's game against the Minnesota Twins after injuring himself on a swing.
Jackson flew out to right field to end the fourth inning and was in obvious discomfort while running to first base. First-base coach Tom Brookens signaled to the dugout, then he and Jackson were met by head athletic trainer Kevin Rand and manager Jim Leyland.

Jim Leyland calls out starting pitchers
The Detroit Tigers were unanimously picked to win the AL Central this year. Most prognosticators thought they’d win by more than 10 games, running away with the division. However, the Tigers have yet to click, and their owning the division has yet to become reality. Granted, the season is still slightly young. The Tigers have [...]
Leyland on criticism: 'Got it coming'
Detroit manager Jim Leyland says the criticism of his struggling team is to be expected.
The Tigers are 18-20 entering Friday night's game against Pittsburgh -- a strikingly mediocre mark for a team that won the AL Central by 15 games in 2011 and added Prince Fielder in the offseason. While Motown waits and hopes the team will hit its stride, patience is running a bit thin....
Game 2012.37: Twins at Tigers
Ryan Raburn can’t get no respect.
Raburn’s first home run of the year was the deadly blow in the Tiger’s 8-run, comeback 6th inning, which overcame a seemingly insurmountable lead built against Max Scherzer, jinxed by Kevin In Dallas.
And yet, in the account of the three 6th inning home runs, Jackson “belted” his, Cabrera “jackhammered” a massive shot, but Raburn merely...
Verlander takes no-hitter into ninth
Justin Verlander came within two outs of his third career no-hitter, allowing only Josh Harrison's ninth-inning single in the Detroit Tigers' 6-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday night.
The 29-year-old Verlander, last year's AL MVP and Cy Young Award winner, nearly became the sixth major league pitcher with at least three career no-hitters. But with one out...
Justin Verlander Nearly Misses Out on Third No-Hitter as Tigers Defeat Pirates
With one out in the ninth inning, and two-strikes against him, Pittsburgh DH Josh Harrison threw his bat at a breaking ball that was off the plate and looped a slow liner up the middle for a base hit. It was the first hit of the night for the Pirates, and the only hit they would record against Justin Verlander in the entire game.
It was just one of those nights. It seems like...
Game 2012.38: Twins at Tigers
18-19, 2nd place, 3 games behind Cle.
Since April 17, the Tigers have won 10 and lost 16. They have played on every single day after they have won a game, and they have lost every game after a win in that stretch. It’s been pretty bad. The bullpen has been horrendous. Here are some team bullpen stats: ERA – 5.17, worst in the majors; WHIP – 1.54, 2nd to worst in the majors...
Verlander Loses No-No in the 9th with One Out
He almost does it again!
Justin Verlander almost does it again. As the Pittsburgh Pirates faced the Detroit Tigers tonight, Verlander almost completed his third career no-hitter. His first no-no came at home on June 12th, 2007, against the Milwaukee Brewers. His second was thrown last year on May 7th, in Toronto, against the Blue Jays. Now, with the Pirates visiting, Verlander put...

DETROIT (AP) -- Jamey Carroll hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to give Minnesota the lead, and the Twins outlasted the sloppy Detroit Tigers 11-7 on Wednesday night.
Detroit made four errors in the first three innings.
The Tigers still led 7-6 when Carroll came up with men on first and second in the sixth. His double off Duane Below (2-1) scored both runners.

Tigers' late homers not enough in loss to Twins
DETROIT (AP) -- Justin Morneau hit a two-run homer in his second game back from a wrist injury, and the Minnesota Twins held on for a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Thursday.
