Two Toronto Blue Jays Prospects Named Player of the Week

The Toronto Blue Jays minor league affiliates last week combined to go 12-13 and combined to outscore their opponents 111-106. The Triple-A affiliate the Buffalo Bisons went 5-2 and outscored their opponent 42-26. The Double-A affiliate in New Hampshire and the Single-A affiliate in Dunedin went 2-4 in their series, both teams scored 21 runs in those six games while Dunedin was outscored 35-28. The High-A affiliate the Vancouver Canadiens split their series despite being outscored 24-20. Two prospects had great weeks which earned them Player of the Week honors, both were pitchers. The first one was RHP who won Pitcher of the Week in the Eastern League for the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, he got the ball on Friday going five shutout innings giving up five hits; he walked four and struck out a season-high eight. This season in six appearances and three of those as starts he is 1-1 with an 8.83 ERA, a 2.08 WHIP, and 19 strikeouts in 17.1 innings. The other is RHP Geison Urbaez with the High-A affiliate the Vancouver Canucks and he won Pitcher of the Week for the Northwest League. Urbaez got the start on Wednesday going five shutout innings, he also didn’t allow a hit; he walked three and struck out five. He doesn’t have a decision this season in four starts with a 1.59 ERA, a 0.88 WHIP, and 14 strikeouts in 17 innings.

RHP CJ Van Eyk Career

Van Eyk was drafted originally in the 19^th round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the New York Mets but ended up attending college at Florida State University and would end up being drafted by the Blue Jays in the second round of the 2020 MLB Draft. His first season came in 2021 where he pitched at High-A Vancouver making 19 starts going 4-6 with a 5.83 ERA, a 1.36 WHIP, and 100 strikeouts in 80.1 innings. He missed the 2022 season with Tommy John surgery. He returned in 2023 and struggled as he made appearances with the Blue Jays rookie league team, Single-A Dunedin, and Double-A New Hampshire combined to appear in 12 games with 11 of those coming as starts going 0-2 with a 3.67 ERA, a 2.07 WHIP, and 19 strikeouts in 17.1 innings. He played in the Arizona Fall League last season with the Surprise Saguaros making five appearances and two of those coming as starts going 2-1 with a 2.51 ERA, a 1.25 WHIP, and 14 strikeouts in 14.1 innings.

RHP Geison Urbaez Career

Urbaez signed as an International Free Agent on October 14, 2020. With the 2020 season, he didn’t appear in the Blue Jays system until 2021 when he pitched for the Blue Jays rookie league team and Single-A Dunedin making 17 appearances with three of those coming as starts going 3-2 with a 6.58 ERA, a 1.76 WHIP, and 38 strikeouts in 39.2 innings. In 2022 he pitched at Single-A Dunedin and Double-A New Hampshire making 28 appearances with nine of those coming as starts he went 3-4 with a 3.82 ERA, a 1.40 WHIP, and 70 strikeouts in 75.1 innings. He missed the 2023 season.
