Here is the latest pertaining to the Reds from MLBtraderumors.com: "It sounds like the Brandon Phillips extension will get done, writes John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer. General Manager Walt Jocketty says that it’s a “complicated contract,” which will take time to be ironed out. That leads Fay to believe that the deal likely involves deferred money. More from Fay, as he has the impression that the Reds hold little hope of re-signing Francisco Cordero. Fay writes that the Reds might be able to get Cordero back at one-year deal in the $7MM range but would rather see the club turn to an in-house solution instead. Fay also writes that David Bell’s promotion to Triple-A manager could be a prelude of things to come. The former major league third baseman is probably the top candidate to replace Dusty Baker if the club decides to go in a different direction. Heyman (via Twitter) also hears that the Phillips extension talks are going well with the Reds, but doesn't kn...

Alonso doesn't take weight loss lightly

Yonder Alonso showed up for a promotion of Redsfest, the team's annual fan expo, noticeably thinner. Alonso vowed to come to spring training lighter and quicker to help with the shift from first base to left field. He hired a personal chef and tailored his workouts toward being an outfielder. Reds still figuring out where Chapman fits in

The Cincinnati Reds are still trying to figure out whether Aroldis Chapman will wind up as a starter or closer. The Cuban left-hander with a fastball that regularly tops 100 mph has pitched in 69 games during his two-year career in the majors, all of them in relief. Reds manager Dusty Baker says the team hoped to stretch out the 23-year-old Chapman in the Arizona Fall League and...

Eric Karabell's Not So Rosy Outlook for 2012 Reds

ESPN.com's Eric Karabell recently laid out some bold 2012 fantasy predictions for each MLB pitching staff, and he's not too high on next year's version of the Redlegs. Here is the snippet taken from that Insider article: " Last season's Reds strikeout leader was Mike Leake, with 118. Oh, how sad. Aroldis Chapman won't top that; he'll win a starting...

#21: Will Drew Stubbs rebound to hit 20 home runs?

When Drew Stubbs was called up in 2009 he became a popular free agent add in fantasy leagues due to his surprisingly useful power/speed combo. In just 42 games that season he hit eight home runs and stole 10 bases, putting him on pace for 65 homers/steals over a full 162 game season. Stubbs was in the majors to stay, and by 2010 he had proved his short rookie stint was no fluke...

Some John Fay tidbits

From the Cincinnati.com: <blockquote Leftovers from Redsfest:–I got the impression that the Reds hold little hope of re-signing Francisco Cordero. The way the closer market has settled, the Reds might be able to get Cordero back at one-year deal in the $7 million range. But I wouldn’t even do that. I’d stay in house. Try Bill Bray first. If he doesn’t work out, turn to...

Mets close to adding reliever, but not Francisco Cordero

Joel Sherman of the New York Post is getting a strong feeling that the Mets might be closing in on a ‘late-inning reliever type,’ but not free-agent RHP Francisco Cordero. Original Post at 3:29 pm: Earlier today on MLB Radio, Terry Collins said the Mets are pursuing two or three set up type relievers rather than an impact closer. According to ESPN.com’s Jayson...

Early News From the Winter Meetings

The Golden Era committee did not select Luis Taint for the Hall of Fame, he received only two of the necessary twelve votes to get selected. The Red Sox are checking in on Josh Willingham but are focused on re-signing David Ortiz. Francisco Cordero may be willing to sign a one-year deal, which the Red Sox would likely jump on.
