Found August 02, 2013 on New York Mets Report:
There are bad ideas and really bad ideas, and the New York Mets considering using Zack Wheeler out of the bullpen falls into the latter category. WHEELER: Leave him alone. (AP) Wheeler has thrown a combined 114.1 minors-and-majors innings this season with a cutoff number at 180. With the intent of limiting his innings, manager Terry Collins and pitching coach Dan Warthen are mulling using Wheeler out of the bullpen. This is a bad idea on so many levels, beginning with the up-and-down nature of a reliever. The Mets will say they will only use Wheeler at the start of an inning, but that’s no guarantee. It is still a change in routine and they must scrap this idea immediately. The Mets’ goal of winning as many games as possible in the second half and limiting Wheeler and Matt Harvey aren’t mutually compatible. The best way to achieve their goal of making a .500 run is to not change their pitching, which has been good. Pitchers are creatures of habit and Wheeler hasn’t pitched out of th...

John Buck catching Matt Harvey, Juan Lagares rakes, Jeremy Hefner doesn’t

In the first two games Matt Harvey started in 2013, John Buck went 3-for-8 with 2 HR and 6 RBIs. Harvey went 2-0 with 1 ER and 19 Ks in 14 IP. And a trend was born. Buck has been behind the plate for every Harvey start since. As a player with limited MLB experience, it’s unlikely that Harvey has demanded that Buck be his personal catcher. It’s much more likely that Terry...

Valdespin and Backman To Face Suspensions And Fines

The Las Vegas 51s are preparing internal suspensions and fines for Jordany Valdespin, Wally Backman, and Armando Rodriguez for their roles in a bench-clearing brawl on Monday evening. Mike Puma of the New York Post first reported the news which was later confirmed by the Las Vegas Twitter account. During the second game of Monday’s doubleheader against the River Cats, Valdespin...

Jenrry Mejia and his future in the Mets’ rotation

While it wasn’t a jaw-dropping performance, Jenrry Mejia had himself quite a second start when he dropped a 3-2 decision on Wednesday night to the Miami Marlins. Although he didn’t receive the win, Mejia battled in an out of trouble (after giving up three runs in the second and third innings) and looked poised while on the mound. Mejia now has two quality starts under his belt...

Four reasons to watch the New York Mets in the second half

It’s only slightly hyperbolic to call the New York Mets the most frustrating franchise in sports. When they don’t re-sign a player, he succeeds elsewhere and the fans revolt. When the team signs a superstar, that player gets hurt or fails to produce and the fans boo. Wednesday, indignant fans ran to Twitter urging the Mets to make a trade at the deadline only to feel the sharp...

Mets Farm System Is Kicking Ass And Taking Names

Wilmer Flores has Las Vegas sitting at the top of the division… So much of the New York Met sales pitch over the last several years has been a message of hope. Met fans were asked to think forward as the franchise went about the business of establishing a culture and practices geared at making their team competitive year in and year out. The first order of business we were told...

Edgin Placed On DL With Stress Fracture, Parnell Unavailable With Sore Neck

Andrew Keh of the New York Times reports that Bobby Parnell has seen a doctor about his neck soreness and will be reexamined on Monday. He’s out tonight and likely tomorrow, at least. Mets manager Terry Collins said he did not have Parnell available to pitch during Thursday’s 3-0 loss to the Miami Marlins. ”He had a stiff neck the other night,” Collins said. “I don...

Terrible idea department: Rumors start on Terry Collins extension

On Friday, this was posted over at MetsBlog: A team executive recently told Mike Puma of the New York Post he would be surprised if Terry Collins is replaced following the 2013 season. “I think they are doing a good job of sprinting to the finish line,” the executive told Puma. Putting aside the lunacy of talking about a finish-line sprint with over 50 games still to play, this...

Mets David Wright exits with apparent hamstring injury

Mets third baseman David Wright had to be removed from the game in the tenth inning of tonight’s game against the Royals after beating out an infield single. About three quarters of the way down the line Wright grabbed at the back of his leg and limped his way through the bag. Pitcher Zack Wheeler was brought in to pinch-run. ESPN’s Adam Rubin says that Wright had been dealing...

Noah Syndergaard May be in Big Leagues by July 2014

During the Mets telecast today, Kevin Burkhardt reported that Double-A pitcher, Noah Syndergaard, could be making landfall in the big leagues by July of 2014, according to Paul DePodesta. In case you’re wondering, this would be the same pattern New York has followed to promote Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler. So far, the results have been pretty good. If it ain’t broke, don’t...

Maxwell Crushes An Aardsma Fastball As Royals Beat The Mets 4-3

For the second time in two games since being named the closer while Bobby Parnell heals up, David Aardsma failed to get the job done as the Royals beat the Mets 4-3 at Citi Field this afternoon. Jeremy Hefner started the game and showed some improvement after back-to-back poor starts and delivered a quality start in a 110-pitch effort. He allowed three earned runs on eight hits...
