DETROIT Victor Martinez of the Detroit Tigers made a play in the sixth inning Sunday that was so great that the player he robbed Boston Red Sox leadoff man Jacoby Ellsbury -- patted him on the back as he lay prone on the grass.
Martinez, starting at first base for only the fourth time this season, dove toward line and knocked down a screamer by Ellsbury. He quickly recovered the ball while on the ground, and blindly flicked it backward to pitcher Drew Smyly covering. The toss was on the mark and Ellsbury was out.
You will not see a better play than Martinez made. It was part magic and all effort.
