As well as the Kansas City Royals have played over the last month, particularly against their own division, they can't seem to figure out the Minnesota Twins. The Royals will try to avoid a three-game sweep and an eighth loss in nine games to the Twins on Sunday. An 18-11 stretch between July 31 and Aug. 30 helped Kansas City climb out of the American League cellar and it was an 11-1 record against Central Division rivals Cleveland, Chicago and Detroit that played the biggest part in that success. However, the Royals continue to struggle against the Twins (55-78), getting swept in Saturday's doubleheader after Friday's game was rained out. Poor play against the league's worst teams has been a big problem for Kansas City, which is 7-23 this season against last-place teams Minnesota, Seattle and Toronto. Following Minnesota's 3-1 victory in the opener, Joe Mauer hit a grand slam and Chris Parmelee added a three-run homer in an 8-7 victory in the nightcap. Wit...

Despite loss, Gardenhire happy with Vasquez

Esmerling Vasquez has had a cup of coffee in the major leagues before, appearing in 31 total games with the Arizona Diamondbacks during the 2009-11 seasons. But it wasn't until Sunday in Kansas City that the Twins right-hander took the mound to start a game in the majors. Not only was Sunday the first career MLB start for Vasquez, but it was also his Minnesota Twins debut. Vasquez...

The Minnesota Twins committed themselves to finishing the season with a six-man rotation Sunday, sending Esmerling Vasquez out for his first major league start and moving Brian Duensing to the bullpen. Deduno puts himself in mix for Twins' 2013 rotation

In his 10th year of professional baseball, Samuel Deduno has finally gotten a chance to prove he's major league material. After going 5-2 with a 3.72 ERA in 10 starts for the Minnesota Twins, it's hard to believe it took this long. He's been showing his potential since July 8, when he made his first major league start at Texas, six days after turning 29. In his last...

Twins reinstate Walters off D.L.

As the month of September began and major league rosters expand, the Twins made a pair of roster moves Saturday. Minnesota reinstated starting pitcher P.J. Walters from the 60-day disabled list and also selected the contract of pitcher Esmerling Vasquez. Walters had a lengthy stint on the disabled list after enduring right shoulder inflammation in mid-June. The right-handed starter...

Carroll homers for first time in over three years

The last time Jamey Carroll homered, he was wearing a Cleveland Indians uniform. Since then, he played two homerless seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers and was without a home run through 120 games (411 at-bats) with the Minnesota Twins. On Monday, Carroll's homerless drought ended. On a 2-2 count from White Sox starter Hector Santiago, Carroll connected on a 95 mph pitch...

Royals' Teaford set for spot start Wednesday

Manager Ned Yost is revising the Kansas City Royals' rotation in part because of a doubleheader last Saturday.
