The Oakland A’s and Chicago Cubs celebrated the Fourth of July by exchanging top-end prospects for stud starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija and fellow starting arm Jason Hammel. Justin Verlander thinks he knows why the A’s acquired two of the top starting pitchers on the market – the Tigers.
The Tigers have knocked the Athletics out of the playoffs the previous two years. Coming into the holiday weekend, the Tigers swept the A’s in a three game series in Detroit. You could say (and I will) the Tigers have the A’s number. But, adding one of the better pitchers over the league’s first half in Samardzija and Hammels, who should be a solid addition, could turn things. And while I don’t believe in “bulletin board material”, JV better be careful not to kick a sleeping giant while they’re down.
As of this post, the A’s own the best record in all of baseball with a .625 winning percentage. As I said, let that sleeping giant snooze, JV.
