MINNEAPOLIS -- Jamey Carroll is officially a Minnesota Twin. The team announced the signing Wednesday after they were reportedly closing in on a deal late last week. The 37-year-old Carroll signed a two-year contract, with a mutual option for a third year in 2014. Carroll, 37, has spent 10 seasons in the majors, most recently with the Los Angeles Dodgers for the past two years. Carroll would provide help for a Twins infield that struggled defensively in 2011. The versatile Carroll played both second base and shortstop for the Dodgers last year, but has also played third base and the outfield as recently as 2010. FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported last week that Carroll will be Minnesota's every-day shortstop. Earlier this month, however, Twins interim general manager Terry Ryan told FOX Sports North that he wasn't ready to give up on shortstop Tsuyoshi Nishioka, who Minnesota signed from Japan last offseason. Nishioka had a disappointing 2011 season, dealing with numerous injuries and a lack of production both in the field and at the plate. Minnesota also saw Trevor Plouffe at shortstop, although Plouffe's defense became enough of an issue to warrant his demotion to Triple-A Rochester during the season. "I think we need to create competition at that (shortstop) position. We struggled there mightily," said Ryan, who took over for Bill Smith as GM last week. "I don't think really right now you could anoint anybody out there from what we've seen. We need to create chances, choices, opportunities." This past season, Carroll played in a career-high 146 games and hit .290 with a .359 on-base percentage. He's posted an OBP of .350 or higher in each of the past four seasons. Carroll, who will turn 38 before the season begins, committed nine errors last year -- four at shortstop and five at second base.
