On Friday night Pittsburgh Pirates rookie right-hander Gerrit Cole made his third career start and notched the third win of his young career. The No. 1 overall pick from the 2011 MLB Draft was excellent yet again, and repeatedly lit up the radar gun. Cole hit 100-plus mph on the radar gun a whopping eight times during his 6.1 innings of work. To put that in perspective, all the rest of the starters in Major League Baseball have combined to hit triple digits just once this season (Matt Harvey). So far this season Cole has shown off his ridiculous stuff repeatedly, and over 18.1 innings of work, he has allowed just one walk, and carries a 3.44 ERA and a 1.04 WHIP. On Friday night he improved to 3-0 with a 5-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels, during which he struck out Albert Pujols twice. The UCLA product should only get better as he gets more comfortable at the big-league level. Video of him getting over 100 mph is below:
