The Philadelphia Phillies currently sit in last place in the NL East with a record of 21-20. It’s not a horrible start for the Phillies, but they’re definitely producing wins at a lot slower pace that we’ve expected. They’re only 4 games behind the division leading Atlanta Braves, but they’re going to have a tough road ahead of them as they’ll have to play a significant part of their schedule against a division that’s vastly approved over 2012. The two biggest reasons for why the Phillies are off to a slow start is their loss of power slugger 1B Ryan Howard and the limited action their ace, Cliff Lee, has seen due to his oblique injury.

Howard has started to participate in more and more rehab work of the last few weeks down in Clearwater, FL and they hope to have him back with the team after a month or so. Lee has made two strong starts since returning from the DL, allowing only 3 runs over 14 innings. Getting Howard back soon and having Lee at full strength should help keep Phillies fans from getting too fed up with their team. It is not time for everyone to panic in Philly.
