Wladamir Klitschko now has competition for the imaginary title of being “the most awesome person with the name Wladamir.” This past weekend Wladamir Balentien broke the Japanese home run record by hitting his 56th (record-breaking) and 57th (exclamation point) dingers. Before heading overseas the Curacao-native played with the Mariners and Reds until 2009 and collected 15 home runs with a .221 batting average in 170 games. Numbers that don’t scream home run champ. But heading into this season Balentein smashed 31 home runs in consecutive seasons, establishing himself as a powerful force in the Nippon. Now, I’m not sure what’s in the water in Japan this year because Vice hasn’t done a piece on it yet, but the 29-year-old ridiculously improved, setting career highs in nearly every category. He’s hit home runs on pitches that Yasiel Puig wouldn’t even swing at, and has pimped them as if he were Iceberg Slim. He’s earned legendary recognition, and I hope to snag a jersey to honor him.
