If you really want to see how a baseball player disrespects an umpire, check out the video below of former Giants catcher Yorvit Torrealba getting all up in the grill of home plate umpire Dario Rivera in a winter league game down in Venezuela on Friday.
In the clip, Torrealba, now with the Rangers, does not agree with Rivera’s ruling of a called third strike in a game between Caribbean and Anzoategui Caracas Lions at the Estadio Universitario.
After arguing the call for a minute or so, Torrealba takes matters into his own hands. Or should I say, takes the ump’s dome into his own hands and violently shoves him backwards:
Had this happened in a Major League Baseball game, Torrealba would have surely received a hefty suspension and fine.
It’s hard telling what the repercussions will be for the 33-year old, but fellow Latin player Jose Offerman pulled a similar stunt a few years back and was kicked out of the Venezuelan league for life.
Torrealba was in the Giants organization from 1995 to 2005.
The Texas Rangers will look into an incident involving catcher Yorvit Torrealba that occurred in a winter-league game in Venezuela.
In the game Friday, Torrealba struck out swinging and then got into an argument with the home-plate umpire. Torrealba then took a swing with his right hand and hit Dario Rivera Jr. in the mask.
Rivera received medical attention on the field but remained...
Texas Rangers catcher Yorvit Torrealba was tossed from a Venezuelan League game after slapping an umpire in the mask while arguing at home plate.
Torrealba swung and missed on strike three then proceeded to argue with Dario Rivera Jr. over the previous call. He eventually lost his cool, smacking Rivera in the protective mask and forcing the umpire to toss him from the game.
Rangers catcher Yorvit Torrealba is doing the winter ball thing in Venezuela, and apparently the warm climate is only managing to anger up Torrealba’s blood, as witnessed by this heated argument he has with the home plate umpire during Friday’s Caracas/Caribes game.
After a horrible looking swing on strike three, the Caracas catcher turned and started jawing with umpire Dario...
Well this probably isn't how the Rangers expected Yorvit Torrealba to spend his time in the Venezuelan winter league.
Torrealba took a beef over an earlier call by umpire Dario Rivero Jr. way, way too far earlier today. After striking out swinging, Torrealba turned around, started screaming at the Rivero before hitting the umpire square in the face. Video of the incident after...
((HT: youtube/orlangerardo))It's now a busy off-season for Texas Rangers catcher Yorvit Torrealba...We'll just tell you that it came after a swinging third strike call where, it appears, he was upset with himself...Dario Rivera, Junior is your home plate umpire. He, apparently, gave Torrealba a second strike call that he didn't agree with that seemed to lead to the above...
