PLAYERS: Jackie Robinson
TEAMS: UCLA Bruins
Jackie Robinson, football star? Yup, once upon a time. USC released footage of a game in 1939 between the Trojans and the UCLA Bruins, Robinson’s team, which resulted in a 0-0 tie but had some pretty good action. In the video, you can see Robinson break a few tackles and launch a vicious hit to pop the ball loose when USC was threatening to score.  As great as Robinson looks on the gridiron, it’s probably safe to say that he made the right call becoming a professional baseball player.

Jackie Robinson’s Inner Strength

Today marks the 66th anniversary of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier of Major League Baseball in the 20th century. Technically, Moses Fleetwood Walker was the first black player in the major leagues – he played for the Toledo Blue Stockings of the American Association in 1884, his only major league season. In the decades succeeding, baseball’s powers had an unwritten...

Jackie Robinson UCLA Football Highlights From 1939 Show Baseball Star’s Incredible Athleticism (Video)

Jackie Robinson was a darn-good baseball player, but if he chose not to pursue America’s Pastime, it’s pretty obvious that he had a solid backup plan in football. On Monday, a UCLA-USC highlight from 1939 hit the internet. In it, Robinson (No. 28 on UCLA) can be seen dominating on both offense and defense. Robinson was one of four black players on the 1939 squad, along with...

Jackie Robinson Day – Heightened Alert After Incident In Boston

I was about to start working on an article about Jackie Robinson when I received word that there had been 2 explosions at the Boston Marathon. There have been no reports of any threats to any areas outside of Boston, but the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has put the public on heightened alert. The Dodgers have a highly visible presence of LAPD officers at every game. ...

Ballpark that bears his name all quiet on Jackie Robinson Day

DAYTONA BEACH Will the success at the box office of 42, the movie based on the life of Jackie Robinson, translate into success at the box office for the Daytona Cubs, the minor-league baseball team whose ballpark bears his name? If it does, it wont be measured tonight on the 66th anniversary of Robinsons major-league debut as a member of the Brooklyn Dodgers. The Cubs, a Class A...

Honoring Jackie Robinson and Major League Baseball

Differences set aside for Jackie Robinson Day

LOS ANGELES Another brawl would not have been appropriate, not on this night with so much going on. Certainly not when Jackie Robinson was being remembered for his quiet courage or when hearts and minds were focused on the events in Boston. A baseball game seemed almost inconsequential. Retaliation would have been shameful. Had the Dodgers chosen to exact revenge for losing a pitcher...

Denard Robinson redeems himself with first pitch at Michigan baseball game

After a horrible first pitch last week before the Detroit Tigers-Toronto Blue Jays game that skipped before home plate and landed on the SportsCenter Not Top Ten, Denard Robinson was given a chance to redeem himself at the Michigan-Notre Dame baseball game on Tuesday.  It’s too bad that this successful first pitch won’t get the same publicity that his bad one did, because this...

Game 13 Recap: Jackie Robinson Night Goes Awry. Padres 6, Dodgers 3

A common theme over the early part of this season for the Los Angeles Dodgers has been this: plenty of base runners, not enough runs. The Dodgers outhit the Padres 12-9 tonight.  On most nights, if your team gets 12 hits, you have to like your chances of winning.  But when your team is the best team in the league hitting with the bases empty and the worst team in the league hitting...

Between Ivan The Terrible & Supernova

Sandwiched between the Jackie Robinson Day ceremonies and a stirring rendition of "Sweet Caroline," Ivan Nova tried last night to get his first win of the season.Whenever Nova takes the mound, you always have to wonder which pitcher has shown up: Ivan The Terrible or Supernova. For a while there, it looked terrible. However, it never got super. Nova eventually settled somewhere...
