Make that two solid starts in a row for San Francisco starter Ryan Vogelsong, who's amping it up at the right time. Before his past two games, the right-hander had an ugly seven-game stretch in which his ERA was 10.31, and it was speculated that he could be omitted from the playoff rotation. That would make him a long reliever as Matt Cain, Madison Bumgarner, Tim Lincecum and Barry Zito get the starting nods. Not so fast, though. Vogelsong beat the Padres 3-1 on Friday night, giving up one run and five hits in six innings. That's exactly what he did his previous start: one run, five hits, six innings. Also against the Padres. It'll be a tough choice for manager Bruce Bochy to leave someone out of the rotation. Cain and Bumgarner are locks, and presumably Vogelsong (14-9) is competing against Lincecum and Zito for the final two spots. Then again, Bochy hinted recently that it's also possible to go with a three-man rotation, in which case two quality starters would be omitted.
