It was a long time coming for Chicago Cubs right-hander Chris Volstad, so perhaps it was only fitting that he had to sit through a 2-hour, 23-minute rain delay before he started Sunday and wait another 30 minutes after another rain delay hit following the eighth inning.

But in the end, Volstad had his first victory in more than a year as the Cubs beat the Colorado Rockies 5-0 at soggy Wrigley Field.

Volstad had gone 24 straight starts without a victory, dating back to July 10, 2011, when he was with the then-Florida Marlins.

He was accustomed to rain in the Marlins' old stadium, but things were getting a little ridiculous Sunday.

"It's only fitting the day took pretty long, right?" said Volstad, who is 1-9 with a 6.28 ERA. "Before the game, I'm used to that. It's happened to me already a couple times this year, and in Florida, obviously. You never know what the weather's going to do.

"With the tarp being pulled in the ninth inning, it was like, 'Come on, let's just get this over with.'"

Eventually, it was over, and so was the streak. Volstad said after his previous start that he was done talking about it. He maintained it wasn't that big a deal Sunday even though he looked relieved.

"I guess a little bit," he said. "But like I've been saying, I guess, I want to throw well and keep the team there and have the team win the game. The streak, I guess that's for you guys more than it is for me. A little sense of relief to get it over with."
