Pro Sports Daily:
Joey Votto moved a step closer to returning Monday when he began baseball activities. How close, he couldn't say. "It's hard for me to tell," Votto said before the Cincinnati Reds' 11-5 loss to San Diego. "I feel like I've made subtle improvements every day. But (the medical staff) has a lot of very positive things to say." Votto, who had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee July 17, is running and doing agility drills. "But not at 100 percent," he said. Votto has no timetable for his return. He said he's still dealing with some pain. "If it was pain-free, I'd be playing right now," Votto said. Votto will start hitting soon. "I'd like to start as soon as I'm ready," he said. "But, like I said before, my body will tell me when I'm ready." Votto wants to get back to playing by as soon as reasonably possible. "I've done nothing but try to get back as soon as possi...
BEST OF MAXIM
When Joey Votto had knee surgery, the Cincinnati Reds were facing a turning point in their season. An offense that had been so-so was going to have to get along without its best hitter for about a month.
How have the Reds responded? With one of the best surges in franchise history.
The Reds have won 10 in a row heading into the start of their series against the San Diego Padres...
The Reds got off to a 0-6 lead in the third inning, but then let the Padres tie it back up in the top of the fourth. Luckily, the relief pitching was on and Brandon Phillips had one more solo shot to contribute in the seventh. Final score: Reds 7, Padres 6.
If the Reds can win tonight, they can ensure no less than a split of the four-game series against the Padres...
CINCINNATI It was little more than a week ago, seven or eight days away from the trade deadline, when Cincinnati Reds fans wanted Drew Stubbs out of sight and out of mind trade him for a sack of sweat socks, a moldy rosin bag and a sticky pine tar rag.
Stubbs was so close to the Mendoza Line (below .200) that if he twitched his toes he'd be on it. And he was striking out at...

Todd Frazier has been known to have success with the no-hand bat approach before, but it didn't work out so well for him on Sunday, as you can see in the clip above. However, all is well that ends well, right? The Reds rolled to their tenth consecutive victory and third straight series sweep to tie the Washington Nationals for...
July 15th was a good-news, bad-news kind of night for the Cincinnati Reds. On the one hand, they won their sixth-straight contest. On the other, that was the night they lost their star first baseman, Joey Votto, to a knee injury that would keep him out for at least a month. At that point, it was reasonable to think the Reds might backslide a little. And when Cincinnati lost two of...
It's been said before, you don't make promises that you can't or don't intend to keep. One person who's undoubtedly rehashing this in their mind right now is none other than longtime radio broadcaster Marty Brennaman. This is because the 70-year old wound up on the losing end of a promise on Sunday and must now hold up his end of the bargain, which...

Earlier this month the Reds position in first place was threatened when slugger Joey Votto went on the DL for knee surgery. Last night's win at Colorado extended a winning streak to nine games before they go for a third consecutive series sweep Sunday. Over that time their runs/game have increased 25% as multiple players in the lineup have stepped up to pick up the slack from his absence.
The Reds, owners of Major League Baseball's lowest bullpen ERA (2.66), added another arm to their relieving core on Tuesday as they acquired RHP Jonathan Broxton from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for minor league prospects LHP Donnie Joseph and RHP JC Sulbaran.
Broxton, 28, was 1-2 with a 2.27 ERA and 23 saves in 35 appearances for the Royals this season. He'...
CINCINNATI (AP) -- The Reds strengthened the back end of their bullpen by acquiring closer Jonathan Broxton from Kansas City for a pair of minor leaguers.
Manager Dusty Baker said after Tuesday's trade that Broxton will be a setup man for closer Aroldis Chapman and can finish games when the left-hander isn't available.
Cincinnati was hoping to upgrade its starting lineup...
There was much speculation that the Reds would try to improve their lineup by going after a leadoff hitter before the trade deadline. Instead they added closer Jonathan Broxton to the bullpen with the lowest ERA in the majors. The Reds bullpen depth is quite remarkable considering the amount of injuries its suffered since before this season. Now they've added an experience right-hander.

A Jonathan Broxton account, (@Brox4AllStarz) showed up on Twitter shortly before the All-Star voting deadline, begging followers to send the Kansas City closer to the All-Star Game. The account was active for a few days, begging fans to send 'ol Broxy to the All-Star game, the majority of the tweets in the third person, with a simpleton's vocabulary.

CINCINNATI (AP) -- Will Venable drove in four runs with a single and a bases-loaded triple Monday night, and the San Diego Padres emphatically ended one of the longest winning streaks in Reds history with an 11-5 victory that brought out the worst in Cincinnati.
Former Reds played starring roles in stopping their 10-game streak. Edinson Volquez (7-7) got the win, and Yonder Alonso...
