Cincinnati Reds first basemen Joey Votto underwent arthroscopic knee surgery Tuesday to repair torn meniscus in his left knee.

Votto was placed on the disabled list, retroactive to June 16, and be replaced on the roster by right-handed pitcher Todd Redmond. Redmond was acquired from the Atlanta Braves in exchange for shortstop Paul Janish.

Votto is expected to miss three to four weeks, the Reds said in a news release.

"It's very tough news," Reds manager Dusty Baker said Monday. "Hopefully the other guys can pick it up in his absence. Joey's in great shape. He's heals very quickly. We've got to tighten our belts."

The procedure is the same one Reds minor-leaguer Chris Valaika returned from in three weeks. It was performed Tuesday by Dr. Timothy Kremchek.

"It's a very simple procedure," general manager Walt Jocketty said. "It takes 20 minutes. It's a very simple 'scope.' We think it will be three, four weeks. Joey feels very comfortable with it. He wants it to do done right away so he can come back and be sharp for the last two months of the season."

Votto is hitting .342 with 14 home runs and 49 RBI. His on-base percentage is .465.
