In his first at-bat after missing 48 games, Joey Votto lined a single off Roy Halladay on Wednesday. Votto went 2-for-3 with a walk in a 6-2 loss to the Phillies.

"It went better than I expected," Votto said. "I'm very happy to be back in the lineup and play. Unfortunately, it came with a loss."

The crowd of 19,267 at Great American Ball Park gave him a long standing ovation before his first at-bat. He promptly singled to left.

"I was very humbled by it, very appreciative to get support like that," he said. "It was unexpected."

His left knee, on which he had surgery on July 17 and another procedure on Aug. 10, did fine.

"It held up pretty well until (Antonio) Bastardo buckled it," said Votto, referring to his strikeout in the eighth against the Phillies' left-handed reliever. "I had no problems at all. If we had a game tomorrow (Thursday), I'd be more than happy to play. I feel fine."

Reds manager Dusty Baker was impressed.

"Joey was fine," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "Those rehab days really helped him. I was thinking about taking him out in the seventh. He said that he was feeling OK. It's big a day off for him. He'll be ready Friday."
