Former Reds infielder Doug Flynn remembers opening day 1975, when he sidled up next to Pete Rose by the dugout railing and checked out the capacity crowd at Riverfront Stadium.
Every opening day in Cincinnati provides memories, some better than others.
Flynn's team started on its way to a World Series championship in 1975. The current Reds have reason to think they could be a contender as well when they get started against the Miami Marlins on Thursday at Great American Ball Park.
The Reds have revamped their roster and given first baseman Joey Votto the longest guaranteed contract in major league history, a 12-year deal that signifies their intention of being a small-market contender in the foreseeable future. Votto was the NL's MVP in 2010.

McCoy: Just call him Pal Joey
If you are a Cincinnati Reds fan, just call him Pal Joey, because Joey Votto is going to be your friendly first baseman for the next 12 years.
His 10-year contract extension, tacked on to the two years for which he is already signed, puts him in a Reds uniform through 2023.

$225 Million Will Get You a lot of Lattes
The Reds locked up Joey Votto today to a 10-year, $225 million dollar contract. It’s the largest contract in Cincinnati baseball history. Hell, it’s the largest contract in Cincinnati sports history.
I’m shocked by this, but extremely pleased. At the end of the day, I think Votto is going to age well and be extremely productive over the course of the next decade. It almost...

Joey Votto, TV markets and some Reds history
by: Josh Bethel
Staff WriterWith Votto locked up through the 2023 season I'm finally glad to be rid of one of the most furious topics of debate among Reds fans. The majority of discussion about since last off season wasn't about how much the Reds would sign Joey Votto for, but who Walt could get for him in a trade or which big market club would shell out the most...

Joey Votto’s Extension Means The Cincinnati Reds Are All-In
I can’t figure out how I feel about Joey Votto’s 10-year, $225 million extension with the Cincinnati Reds. It seems like a good deal in certain respects, but the gamble the Reds are taking on him shouldn’t be that big of a deal when this is essentially a regular contract for the richest five teams in baseball.
In the end, it’s probably a good deal for the franchise while...
