Bailey diplomatic in addressing the Hanrahan trade

The Red Sox made it very clear after acquiring Joel Hanrahan that the former Pirate would close and incumbent closer Andrew Bailey would be a set-up man. How is Bailey handling the demotion? Quite well, actually. Via WEEI: "I’m excited to have him. I think it makes our bullpen that much stronger," said Bailey. [...] "I think that with me and him going eight...

Andrew Bailey ‘Excited’ About Red Sox’ Trade for Joel Hanrahan, Says ‘Focus Is on Winning’

Andrew Bailey doesn’t sound like a man who just lost his job. In his mind, he hasn’t. With closer Joel Hanrahan now in the mix in Boston, Bailey will enter spring training in a setup role. Bailey, of course, figured to be the team’s closer before the trade, but Red Sox assistant general manager Brian O’Halloran noted shortly after the Hanrahan deal that their new acquisition...

Roster Watch: Joel Hanrahan and Brock Holt

Well this one should be pretty easy.  Joel Hanrahan and Brock Holt were traded to the Boston Red Sox right after Christmas.  I combined both of these since they went together and honestly I just won’t have enough to write about either one now that they are gone. You can read all about that trade [...]

The iconic field from the movie ‘Field of Dreams’ has been sold to Go the Distance Baseball LLC (a group of investors which includes HOF’er Wade Boggs). The purchase was made for a whopping $3.4 million–actually a bargain from its initial asking price of $5.4 million. The property was purchased from owners Don and Becky Lansing. The Des Moines Register reports that the investment...

An internal solution for the first base depth issue

It's not often that reader-submitted questions to mailbags contain good ideas for acquisitions. Generally they want to acquire Giancarlo Stanton for Felix Doubront and 50 grand, or forget that Bobby Abreu was born in 1875. Or they want to move Dustin Pedroia to shortstop and put Ciriaco at second, and transform Andrew Bailey into a starter. People have bad ideas, is what I'...

2012's Biggest Offseason Moves: Hanrahan to Boston, Grilli to close

Happy New Year and welcome to 2013! Red Sox Have Increased Likability, But Spring Training Will Show If Team Has Improved (Video)

Between clubhouse chemistry, injuries and drama surrounding their manager, nothing went right for the Red Sox in 2012. Now, with John Farrell manning the dugout and a new concentration on character guys in the clubhouse, the only thing left for the 2013 Red Sox to succeed may be health. Pete Abraham told Dale Arnold on NESN Daily that as long as this team stays healthy, they should...

Bailey says demotion is 'not an issue'

Disappointed? Sure, that's an accurate description of Andrew Bailey's sentiments after being removed from his role as theBoston Red Sox closer in the wake of the recent trade for Joel Hanrahan. But Bailey isn't dwelling on it. "It's not an issue," Bailey told the Boston Herald. "Obviously throwing the ninth inning is what everyone wants to do. But...

Justin Morneau, Michael Morse, Justin Smoak Should Be Targets for Red Sox If Mike Napoli Deal Falls Through (Video)

It’s been over a month since the Red Sox reportedly agreed to a deal with Mike Napoli, but no official announcement has been made and there are reports that a hip issue is causing the delay. Is it time to move on? The Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo and WEEI.com’s Alex Speier debated that question on NESN Daily Wednesday, and each had a rather different response. Cafardo believes...

Red Sox Rumors: Boston Unlikely to Sign Bobby Abreu

While the Boston Red Sox were tied to free agent Bobby Abreu yesterday, the club is unlikely to sign the veteran this winter, according to Scott Lauber of The Boston Herald. Although the Red Sox dispatched scouts to Venezuela last week to observe Bobby Abreu's workout, it's unlikely the club will sign the veteran outfielder.  The trip, while confirmed today...

Your Morning Dump...where the rotation isn't THAT bad.

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. General manager Ben Cherington has dramatically changed the roster of a team that lost 93 games last season. But only 16 percent of all the money spent has gone to improve the team’s greatest weakness...

Report: Red Sox Scouting Javier Vazquez on Friday in Puerto Rican Winter League Tournament

It seems this is the week of scouting aging former Yankees for the Red Sox. On Monday, news surfaced that Boston had worked out Bobby Abreu in Venezuela, and on Friday, the team is attending Javier Vazquez‘s start in the Puerto Rican Winter League postseason tournament to scout the right hander, according to Rob Bradford of WEEI.com. Vazquez surprisingly sat out of baseball in...
