Andrew McCutchen and the Pittsburgh Pirates are riding high from their first postseason victory in 21 years. And now, after beating the Cincinnati Reds in the wild-card game, the Pirates are set to face another familiar foe in an unfamiliar month: the NL Central champion Cardinals in October. Game 1 of their division series is Thursday night in St. Louis. The Cardinals edged the Pirates for the division title, with Pittsburgh winning the regular-season series, but they have quite the advantage in postseason experience. Adam Wainwright has to like this matchup, too. St. Louis' ace is set to start the opener and will be available on regular rest for a possible deciding Game 5 against a team he went 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in three starts this season.

Pirates CF McCutchen OK after getting hit in head

McCutchen says when he turned his head a ball off the bat of Jordy Mercer hopped off the ground and caught him around his right ear. McCutchen walked...

Pirates' Andrew McCutchen hit in the head during batting practice

With the Pittsburgh Pirates gearing up for their one game playoff against the Cincinnati Reds, they cannot afford to have any key players go down.  So when Andrew McCutchen was hit in the head during batting practice, the team surely held its collective breath.  Fortunately, McCutchen was alright. According to an AP report, McCutchen was in the outfield shagging fly balls during...

Did Mike Matheny make a mistake in starting Lance Lynn in game two?

Yes, I know that hindsight is 20/20 and everyone questions a manager after things go wrong, but when Mike Matheny announced that Lance Lynn would start game 2 of the NLDS earlier this week, my first thought was, why Lance Lynn? Why not Shelby Miller or Joe Kelly or even Michael Wacha? Joe Kelly would seem to be the logical choice, given that he was the Cardinals best starter in...

Adam Wainwright and Clayton Kershaw absolutely dealt yesterday, pitching the Cardinals and Dodgers to 1-0 NLDS leads over the Pirates and Braves respectively. Neither game was really all that close, and both series are in line to end like most of our staff predicted. PIC OF THE DAY Kris Medlen says on his face what all of the Braves were thinking last night. (Daniel...

Pirates move on to NLDS after beating Reds 6-2

Andrew McCutchen was in mid-answer when teammate A.J. Burnett stuck a bottle of champagne inside the jersey of the star Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder and turned it upside down. ''Feels good,'' McCutchen said with a laugh as the bottle emptied, further drenching his already soaked uniform. ''I could get used to this.'' So could the city he plays...

St. Louis' Mr. October: Freese steps up big yet again in postseason play

ST. LOUIS -- Carlos Beltran hit the monster homer and Adam Wainwright delivered the dominant start for the St. Louis Cardinals Thursday afternoon. But as Wainwright dissected the 9-1 victory over the Pirates in the NL Division Series, third baseman David Freese was the player he called, "St. Louis' version of Mr. October." "He doesn't need to be saying that...

MLB Game Picks - Thursday: October 3, 2013

I love Nick Swisher, I do. But his performance in the Wild Card Game last night against the Rays was so reminiscent of past post seasons for him. His first few times up, he had a strikeout and then grounded the ball right into the teeth of the shift when there were no fielders from second base to third. Then, when he had a man on first and third, instead of embracing or understanding...

Sitting atop NL, Cardinals await opponent

(Eds: Should stand. With AP Photos.) By R.B. FALLSTROM AP Sports Writer This time last year, the St. Louis Cardinals had no chance to exhale and things ended up working out pretty well. Still, they didn't want to go through that tension again. Instead of hustling off somewhere for an elimination game, the NL Central champion Cardinals earned a day off Monday. They can savor...
