In early March 2011, Adam Wainwright had “Tommy John” surgery to replace a ligament in his right elbow. For the first time since forever, he was not playing baseball in April when the Masters Tournament came around. Wainwright took advantage of the opportunity to go to Augusta National and watch the best players in the world compete for one of the most coveted championships in golf. He wasn’t just there to walk among the azaleas., munch on egg salad and fill orders for “Masters” paraphernalia. Wainwright is a terrific golfer, but he wasn’t there for swing tips, either. He was there to learn, to study how the best players “grind,” to prepare himself for moments like this. “I wanted to follow golfers for extended amounts of time just to see if they let up,” Wainwright said. “And every single shot, every single putt was like it was the last putt to win the whole thing, or it was like the last shot to win the whole thing … Or it was like the last pitch of the ...

Aced out: Cards Wainwright loses again

Adam Wainwright was much better in his second start of the World Series. Still, the St. Louis Cardinals needed a lot more from their ace. The 19-game winner was outpitched again by Jon Lester, losing to the Red Sox 3-1 in Game 5 on Monday night. Despite an impressive 10 strikeouts, Wainwright has put the Cardinals in a 3-2 hole. To win the World Series for the second time in three...

Adam Wainwright: My mechanics were bad in Game 1

Adam Wainwright is pretty much the definition of an ace pitcher. He was one of the best pitchers in baseball in 2009 and 2010, and he was one of the best in 2012 and this season after returning from surgery in 2011. He was light’s out in the NLDS against the Pittsburgh Pirates and had […]

Wainwright, Ortiz, and Facing the Monster

What happened in the sixth inning Monday night probably mattered. It probably mattered in ways we can’t conceive of, in ways we’d never be able to figure out. Everything, every last thing in a baseball game, is connected, and if you remove one screw, the whole bridge might collapse. No, that doesn’t work. The whole bridge might rearrange itself? No, that doesn’t work, either...

Preview: It's Wainwright vs. Lester in World Series Game 5

Jon Lester gave the Boston Red Sox a one-game lead in his first start of the World Series. He's in a position to do it again in his second. After evening the series Sunday, the Red Sox turn to the left-hander for Monday night's Game 5 in St. Louis with hopes of returning to Boston a win away from their third World Series title in 10 seasons. Lester, 3-1 this postseason...

TCN 2013 St. Louis Starting Pitcher of Year

There is no doubt that Adam Wainwright is the ace and leader of the Cardinals pitching staff.

Lester, Wainwright, and World Series Repeat Starters

One of the points we’ve been hammering home really all postseason long is that starting pitchers tend to perform worse and worse as a game goes on. It’s far from a dramatic effect — a pitcher the third time around shouldn’t be expected to get completely and utterly bombed — but an effect is there, as pitchers make subsequent trips through the order. Starters become less...

Photo: World Series overshadows MNF in St. Louis

Who says that baseball is dying? With the World Series in town, St. Louis’ collective attention is focused on the Red Sox and Cardinals squaring off in Game 5, leaving the Monday Night Football matchup that is also in the city to be all but forgotten. As Adam Wainwright and Jon Lester continue to deal in a battle of the aces, David Ortiz builds on his legendary postseason resume...

Will Fate Choose Adam Wainwright In World Series’ Game 5?

Nobody knows where October’s spotlight will fall. Sunday it shined on journeyman outfielder Jonny Gomes, the unlikely slugger of a game-winning three-run homer for Boston in Game 4. Gomes is proof October doesn’t always belong to the marquee names. The previous night it shined on the umpires, who correctly ended Game 3 on an obstruction call. After Gomes’ blast on Sunday, fate...
