Cardinals minor league spring training notebook: 03/22

On Thursday, the St. Louis Cardinals had yet another camp day in which their top two and lower two rosters opposed each other while the Marlins and Mets faced off elsewhere. In addition, in large part due to Wednesday’s cancellations due to wet grounds, three was even more action than usual. A third game plus a simulated game on the fourth diamond of the quad were added. There...

Next Cardinals’ crop could be quite the harvest

Sunday’s St. Louis Post-Dispatch included a story on St. Louis Cardinals outfield prospect Oscar Taveras. Taveras opened eyes last season when he posted the highest batting average in the Midwest League since 1956. Taveras hit .386 with an on-base percentage of .444. Manager Mike Matheny admitted the batting mark caught his eye and has given Taveras a handful of at-bats with the...

Carpenter out indefinitely with nerve irritation

Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter has been shutdown indefinitely due to nerve irritation that has led to weakness in his right shoulder, the club announced Friday. The news is particularly troubling to the Cardinals and Carpenter, who missed the 2004 playoffs due to a similar nerve issue and had surgery in 2008 to transpose a nerve in his right elbow. The right-hander was sidelined...

The price of a World Series title? For Cardinals, it may be Chris Carpenter.

There’s always a price to pay in life. Success doesn’t come without failure and often times, elation doesn’t come without desolation. For the St. Louis Cardinals, the price of their miraculous 2011 championship wasn’t losing Albert Pujols (like many had thought), but perhaps ace Chris Carpenter. You could certainly make a case for Pujols or World Series hero David Freese...

CARDINALS THIRD BASEMAN DAVID FREESE GETS A GQ MAKEOVER

David Freese led the St. Louis Cardinals to a World Series victory last season, earning the NLCS MVP and World Series MVP awards in the process. Despite his success and his new status as a hometown hero, the Cardinals third baseman still had room for improvement, at least when it came to his fashion game. Freese classified his personal style as “lacking” and referred to his hair...

Garcia strikes out nine in dominant outing

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) -- St. Louis manager Mike Matheny liked what he saw from Jaime Garcia on Thursday. Garcia struck out nine in five innings and the Cardinals roughed up Gio Gonzalez in a 9-0 win over the Washington Nationals. "When Jaime is on he's something to watch," Matheny said. "He's just got that stuff that's hard to square up. It's not a fun...

Lance Berkman: Keeper of the Faith

This past week, Lance Berkman created a stir nationally when he offered his opinions of the Astros move to the American League. Throughout the offseason he has been offering his opinions on the move itself. The crime of it all is that he was the only prominent person opposing the move and calling it an abomination. This week he uttered the words that all of us in the...

Minus big names, champion Cards have motivation

Hard to believe, but losing Albert Pujols might just end up being a plus for the St. Louis hitters. A bigger barrier toward the Cardinals repeating could be a rotation that got one big arm back yet has another on the shelf. The money the World Series champions would have devoted to Pujols, who signed a 10-year, $240 million deal with the Los Angeles Angels, paid for rejuvenated...
