The waiter accused of refusing to serve Oakland Athletics catcher Bruce Maxwell over his anthem protest claims the MLB player is “outright lying” about what happened.

The incident occurred at an Alabama restaurant in his hometown of Huntsville where Maxwell was dining with a friend and local councilman Devyn Keith. Maxwell claimed the waiter refused to serve him over his anthem protests.

“He was like, ‘You’re the guy who took the knee? I voted for Trump and I stand for everything he stands for,’” Maxwell said of the interaction.

According to Matt Henry, the 42-year-old waiter, no such thing ever happened. Instead, Henry says it all started when he refused to serve Maxwell’s friend due to an expired ID.

“He is outright lying. This is really upsetting as he was given full service, I didn’t even know who Bruce Maxwell was,” Matt Henry, a 42-year-old waiter, told FOX News, via the New York Post. “This all started because I carded his friend who wanted to order a beer.”

Henry claims the friend then followed him to the kitchen.

“He asked me, don’t you know who Bruce Maxwell is, and told me I was making everyone feel uncomfortable. Nobody was even paying attention to them,” Henry said. “I didn’t know anything about him or the kneeling.”

Henry insists it all had to do with the ID issue.

The councilman, according to Henry, then approached the manager to ask for another server, which Henry said was “no big deal.”

The restaurant manager on duty corroborated Henry’s characterization of what transpired to FOX News. Maxwell was apparently polite throughout the meal and the manager added the party paid their bill and left without incident.

Maxwell, whose father is a U.S. Army veteran, became the first major leaguer to engage in an anthem protest when he took to a knee and placed his hand over his heart during the anthem before a Sept. 23 game.

An Athletics spokesperson told FOX News that the club would have no comment, but indicated Maxwell maintains his version of events are accurate.
