I don't know if there's ever been a Pittsburgh Pirate more hyped than Pedro Alvarez and I don't know if there ever will be. He came to the Pirates under a perfect storm of conditions. He was Neal Huntington's first draft pick, he represented the first time that the Pirates had ever drafted the best player regardless of the price tag, the first time they decided to deal with Scott Boras rather than shooting for an easier path. I spent the whole summer watching this video, counting down the days until August 15th, when we'd know for sure that Alvarez would be a Pirate. That night, there was a discussion thread on this site as lively as any thread in WHYGAVS's seven year history. We all celebrated at 12:15 or 12:30 or whenever the news came across that Alvarez had officially signed. Then, we all freaked out a few weeks later when Alvarez and Boras decided to challenge the contract and exhaled when the situation got cleared up. Everyone obsessed over his minor le...

EriKKKKKKKKKKK Bedard, Pedro salvage final game against Cards

Final: Pirates 6, Cardinals 3 WP: Erik Bedard (2-4, 2.65 ERA) LP: Jake Westbrook (3-2, 2.12 ERA) I couldn’t watch this game, but I did listen to it and from what I heard, it had to be one of the stranger starts a pitcher could have. Bedard started off the game way off as he gave up two runs in the first inning and threw over 55 pitches in his first two innings. However, he then...

EriK and El Toro

After last night, and even early on today, it looked like this series would be an absolute disaster for the Pirates. Instead, they were able to pick up a win on getaway day and finish their difficult road trip to Atlanta and St. Louis at 3-4. The two big stars today were Erik Bedard and Pedro Alvarez. I’ll start with Bedard. He allowed three doubles in the first to make it 2-0...

Will Bedard be the stopper?

Yesterday, it was exciting that the Pirates had scored 17 runs in their last two days. Today, it's pretty concerning that they've given up 22 in their last two. The heady days of "no one scores more than five runs EVER" are well behind us, apparently, and now we're living in a lawless world where anything can happen in a baseball game. The Pirates will try...

Cardinals done in by 17 Ks in loss to Pirates

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Erik Bedard struck out a season-high 11, including seven straight batters, and Pedro Alvarez hit a go-ahead home run as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3 Thursday to avoid a three-game sweep. Bedard (2-4) was pulled after five innings. Alvarez hit his two-run drive in the sixth. Clint Barmes had a pair of RBI doubles for the Pirates, who...

Pitcher Profile: Lance Lynn for 2012 Fantasy Baseball

Hola Razzballers!  This is my first article for Razzball Baseball and if you’re a Razzball loyalist (and really, why aren’t you?) you may recognize me from the fantasy football side of things last year.  I look forward to summoning you guys (and some gals) some Phillip Humber-esque perfect fantasy advice.  Just not against the Red Sox or Indians. I must admit early on, I...

Cueto throws complete game, Reds rout Pirates

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Johnny Cueto remained unbeaten, giving up seven hits in his first complete game of the season as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-1 on Friday night. The right-hander struck out three without a walk to improve to 4-0 and lower his ERA to 1.32. Zack Cozart and Drew Stubbs homered on consecutive pitches in the seventh inning off Pittsburgh starter...

Reds vs. Pirates series preview

The Reds meet the divisional rival Pirates for the first time this season with a trip to Pittsburgh and a three-game set beginning on Friday night. If you like offense, you might not want to check out this series preview…. Cincinnati (12-12)  at Pittsburgh (11-14) We’re all well aware of the Reds’ offensive woes. The Redlegs’...

Gotta get it together (watch it)

The Pirates are 11-14 entering a nine-game homestand against the Reds, Nationals, and Astros. They have been occasionally brilliant on the mound this year and recently compentent at the plate. If you were asking me to be honest, I'd tell you that I think that they haven't played as well as their record indicates this year and that on some nights I feel like I'm watching...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. St. Louis Cardinals – Game 25

I’m not sure if it’s time to panic yet or not. Okay it isn’t. The pitching has gotten rocked as of late but before we bury these guys let’s remember that they have been very good for longer than they have been very bad.  Every pitcher has bad outing.  It happens. First Pitch: 1:45 PM [...]

When it rains it pours. I hope.

The Pittsburgh Pirates have scored 17 runs in their last two games, lead mostly by a scorching hot Pedro Alvarez. How long can Pedro's hot streak last? Can the Pirates keep this sort of offense clicking for longer than a day or two? Would the team actually be kind of good if they could pull that feat off? Tonight we get even more questions as they relate to AJ Burnett. Through...
