As the Astros' season has long since turned into a period to take inventory of what are going to be the usable parts for next season, you couldn't fault Brett Wallace for wanting to put on a meaningful audition.

Wallace has endured an up-and-down career with the Astros, his fourth organization but first major league team, but he is off to a terrific start with Houston.

With his two home runs Wednesday, Wallace is hitting .333 with a .646 slugging percentage. This comes as no surprise to manager Brad Mills, nor are the 20 home runs that Wallace has hit between the major league and Triple-A levels in 100 games this season.

"Ever since he signed, everybody felt he was going to have some pop," Mills said. "We saw it last time he was up here, the way he started to swing the bat, and he continued to swing the bat like that in Oklahoma City.

"And now it's great to see him put those at-bats together and hit the ball like he did."

Wallace's arrival in the big leagues was somewhat delayed because the Astros were looking to showcase other players in July for trades. He'd been successful in his 11-game stint when Carlos Lee was on the disabled list, but it was three weeks after Lee was traded before he was recalled.

Now that he's up, he's trying not to look at it as an audition, even though his role for next season is hardly clear. Wallace is playing mostly first base in the major leagues, but he played some third in Triple-A, and he could benefit from the addition of the designated hitter when the Astros move into the American League next year.

"I just take it as a challenge for myself," Wallace said. "You can't worry about down the road or your spot or what they're thinking for the lineup. You've just got to work hard every day and keep getting better, and if I keep doing that, if I play well and keep getting better and keep playing aggressive, it's going to be hard to not have a spot."
