Wandy Peralta Chose Padres Offer Over One From Mets

The San Diego Padres recently signed left-handed pitcher Wandy Peralta to a four-year deal, but Peralta also had the opportunity to stay in New York and play for the Mets.

League sources shared with Andy Martino of SNY earlier this week that the Mets had a two-year offer for Peralta with about $8-10 million in total guarantees on the table.

The incumbent New York Yankees were reportedly also interested in Peralta.

Instead, Peralta opted to sign with the Padres on a four-year, $16.5 million deal. Peralta comes to the Padres after spending the past three seasons with the Yankees, where he had the best three seasons in terms of ERA of his career. Peralta had less than a 3.00 ERA in each of those campaigns, including a 2.83 ERA in 2023.

Prior to his time on the Yankees, Peralta played for the San Francisco Giants from 2019-21, and the Cincinnati Reds from 2016-19. He struggled during three of those seasons with the Reds, including an 8.59 ERA in 2016 and 6.09 ERA in 2019.

The Giants claimed him off of waivers in late 2019, where he had two seasons with an ERA a bit above 3.00, before starting 2021 with a 5.40 ERA that led to the Giants trading Peralta to the Yankees.

If Peralta pitches the way he did with the Yankees in San Diego, the Padres are adding another solid relief pitcher to their already reloaded bullpen. 

There won't be much time for a turnaround for Peralta before he joins his new team ahead of the 2024 season, with pitchers and catchers reporting for the Padres on February 11.
