Wandy Rodriguez (credits below) Much like the Hot Rod, it appears American’s fondness for the WandyRod has ended prematurely. Yet, over the last three seasons, Wandy has a 3.36 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 2.69 K:BB rate in 591.2 IPs (197 per year). Since 2009, Wandy has the 17th most K’s, is tied for 27th in ERA and for 31st in wins and is 52nd in WHIP. However, Wandy appears to be barely inside the top 50 SPs this season for most and is going behind the likes of Jeremy Hellickson, Jordan Zimmermann, Adam Wainwright, Matt Moore, and others. While, last season, Wandy’s K/9 rate dipped below 8.00 for the first time and his walk rate increased for the third consecutive season, there’s no reason for concern. For one, he induced the same amount of ground balls and line drives with the only batted ball spike coming in his HR/FB rate. After being between 9 – 9.9% the previous three seasons, his HR/FB rate was 13%, which seems to be an outlier (his career HR/FB rate is 11%). Expect that to come ...

Tigers' split squad rained out vs Astros

Wandy Rodriguez wouldn't let a rainout knock him off a schedule that will allow him to start on opening day for the Houston Astros. The left-hander was slated to make his second start of the spring Sunday against a Detroit Tigers split squad but the game was postponed because of a steady downpour. Rodriguez pitched anyway. ''I threw about 60 pitches in the bullpen...

Snyder, Wallace both relishing shot with 'Stros

Chris Snyder and Chris Wallace have much in common: Both are catchers that played high school ball in the Houston area well as at the University of Houston and both are trying to overcome significant career obstacles. Snyder is trying to extend a career which may have ended this off-season had the Astros not given the 31 year-old veteran an opportunity. Snyder underwent significant...

MLB 2012 Preview: Houston Astros

There are signs of hope in Astroland. No, you’re not going to win the World Series this decade. Don’t be silly. You do have a new owner, though, and a new general manager in Jeff Luhnow, formerly of the world champion Cardinals organization. You could do worse. This is also the Astros’s last season in the National League as they will move to the American League West and even...

Weiland looks sharp as Astros top Yankees 4-3

Kyle Weiland made a good first impression with his new boss. Weiland threw four hitless innings Monday night as the Houston Astros beat the New York Yankees 4-3. With new Astros owner Jim Crane in attendance at his first spring training game, Weiland induced nine ground-ball outs. He worked out of a two-on, two-outs jam in the third by coaxing Curtis Granderson into a grounder...

Spring Training: The Phils suffer a walk-off lost to the Astros on a three-run home run in extra-innings, 6-5.

The Phils lose in extra-inning on an one-out walk-off three run home run, losing to the Astros, 6-5. The Astros broke a 0-0 tie in the fourth as, with two men on, and with one man out, Matt Down hits a sacrifice fly, scoring J.D. Martinez, who had earlier singled, then stopped at third on Carlos Lee’s double, giving the Astros a 1-0 lead. The Phils tied the game up at one-all in...

Astros notes: Pence faces former team

Livan Hernandez pitched five scoreless innings and allowed 5 hits in his outing against the Phillies Tuesday. "I threw the ball down today," said Hernandez. "Everything is going the way I want and I feel better and better every time I go on the mound." Former Astro Hunter Pence was back in Kissimmee Tuesday as the Phillies made a visit to Osceola County Stadium...
