Smoltz pitched five innings, allowing five earned runs on seven hits, one walk and five strikeouts.
David Ortiz drove home his 34th RBI on a sacrifice fly to left field and Rocco Baldelli hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning. Boston had eight hits in the loss.
Jordan Zimmerann earned the win pitching seven innings, yielding five hits, one earned run, walking one batter with six strikeouts.

Daniel Bard and Takashi Saito gave up four runs in just two innings pitched.
