You can’t swing a laptop by its power cable without hitting some article about how great Mike Trout has been this season, and how such a performance from a rookie is so extremely rare. Since his call-up in late April and his subsequent tear through the American League, Trout has been a fantastic story. I get interested about a lot of things during the baseball season, but very few things get me legitimately excited. There is no rhyme or reason to my reactions, no excitement equation that can be solved for to predict what will pique my interest. It just happens. And Mike Trout has me excited, as I’m sure he does most fans. But I shall not enumerate on how terrific Trout is. Plenty of writers have done that already, and any self-respecting baseball fan is paying attention to what’s going on with this young man’s season. Through some magical combination of luck, opportunity, hard work, and coincidences, Trout is doing wonderfully-silly things. He is defying definitions of what rooki...

Mike Trout's SI cover brings back memories

This is the cover of the new issue of Sports Illustrated. Angels rookie, and probable league MVP, Mike Trout is prominently featured as THE SUPERNATURAL. Trout is the best player in baseball, and just turned 21 two weeks ago. He's six homers away from a 30/30 season, and has played in just 100 games this year. He has a 1.013 OPS on the season, and is playing Gold Glove...

Mike Trout Refreshing Reminder That Being 'Product of Environment' Is Not Always Bad Thing

Mike Trout was 16 years old when I knew he would play in the major leagues. Do not misread that. Nobody saw Trout becoming a Most Valuable Player candidate in his rookie season or gracing the cover of Sports Illustrated at 21. Trout's emergence as a professional prospect was one of the most incredible phenomena anyone in the city of Millville, N.J., had ever experienced, not...

Mike Trout: Poetry In Motion — Or FIsh Tale?

Somewhere along the meteoric path charted by Mike Trout this season, I became smitten with this whole fish tale. A National League sympathizer by habit, I’d only caught portions of the Trout tale. But when ESPN devoted a lengthy segment solely to the analytic physics of one catch made by the Los Angeles Angels outfielder, I knew that all of us in the audience were being sucked...

Mike Trout Makes First-Ever Visit to Fenway Mark as Angels' Phenom Takes in Unparalleled Rookie Success

BOSTON -- It's pretty impossible not to use hyperbole when talking about Mike Trout. He has an accurate arm, but his throwing strength is pretty average. However that's the only average thing about the 21-year-old phenom and All-Star, who's still in his rookie campaign but is already being compared to the game's all-time greats. Consider this, through the first 99...

Sabermetric Spotlight: Mike Trout

Sabermetric Spotlight: Mike Trout, OF, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim The Reason - There should be zero question as to why I’m writing about Mike Trout for my latest installment of Sabermetric Spotlight. The kid is a phenom, already. Most likely your 2012 AL MVP. He just turned 21. My biggest question heading into this article is finding out what exactly he excels with and gain...

Fenway Park Heckler To Mike Trout, “I Like Salmon”

A.B. So this is what the Red Sox season has come down to. In order to preserve the sell out streak (that we all know ended a long time ago), Sox ownership is basically giving away tickets on the streets of Boston. That’s how you get Mr. creativity here sitting 3 seats from the NESN broadcast booth. But I’ll admit it, I laughed. It was one of those comments that are so unfunny...

Mike Trout's MVP Candidacy Even More Intriguing in Light of Rookie's Adjustments to League (Video)

It's not easy being a rookie in the major leagues. Then again, it's not easy to win the MVP award, either. Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angeles has a chance to do both this year after dominating the American League for most of 2012. Considering Justin Verlander's MVP win last year, NESN Nation's Dan Duquette is trying not to be surprised when an unorthodox candidate...

Will Middlebrooks Anticipated Mike Trout's Breakout Success, Knew He Could Be 'Rookie of the Year'

BOSTON –– Almost overnight, Mike Trout blossomed from rising prospect to major league superstar. But Will Middlebrooks saw it coming long before most. Nearly one year ago, the Red Sox third baseman witnessed flashes of brilliance from the 21-year-old as teammates on the Scottsdale Scorpions, an Arizona Fall League team. "[He was] just a raw all-around athlete," Middlebrooks...

Trout fails to impress, Cabrera much better as Angels top Tigers 2-1

In a game showcasing the talents of two of the top candidates for the American League Most Valuable Player award, LA’s Mike Trout (0-5, 1 SO) remained hitless and left 3 runners on base. Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera (2-4, 1 HR), on the other hand, slugged a solo homerun in front of a soldout crowd at Comerica park. Trout went 0-5 with a strikeout to see his average drop to .341 as...

Bobby Valentine Admires Mike Trout's Skills During Rookie Season, Calls Him 'A Special Player'

BOSTON –– When the Nationals visited Fenway Park in June, Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine fawned over Bryce Harper. Nearly two months later, he shared similar admiration for Angels outfielder Mike Trout. "You see SportsCenter and whatever the highlights are and he's always in them," Valentine said. "Watching him last night –– the first at-bat [a strikeout...

Adrian Gonzalez, Mike Trout Face Off in Red Sox Homestand That Calls for Plenty of Offense

Editor's note: The temperature gauge is a Bill James-created statistic that measures how hot or cold hitters are. We will spotlight Red Sox and opposing team temperatures on game days. The Red Sox have received a lot of attention for their pitching woes, and this week may be no different, as the hard-hitting Angels come into Fenway Park for what promises to be an offense-filled...

Adrian Gonzalez Beginning to Cool Down as Angels' Mike Trout Stays Red Hot

Editor's note: The temperature gauge is a Bill James-created statistic that measures how hot or cold hitters are. We will spotlight Red Sox and opposing team temperatures on game days. Not long ago, Adrian Gonzalez was one of the hottest hitters on the planet, winning an MLB Player of the Week award and leading the Red Sox offense in the absence of David Ortiz. Well, Gonzalez...

The Best Hitter In The National League Is…

If you go to the leaderboards for 2012, you’ll see all the familiar names – Mike Trout, Andrew McCutchen, David Wright, etc… However, something kinda fun happens if you then reset the minimum plate appearances filter down to, say, 50 plate appearances, so you capture some performances from guys who aren’t exactly everyday players. Then, sandwiched in between Trout and Joey...
