Nervous Yankee fans got their wish Thursday when Team USA’s roster was announced without Andy Pettitte’s name on it. The left-hander will not pitch in this year’s World Baseball Classic, contradicting reports earlier in the week that the soon-to-be 41 year old would participate.
No reason has come out yet as to why Pettitte is not on the roster, but chances are that the Yankee front office and manager Joe Girardi had the final say and persuaded him to focus solely on Spring Training and being healthy for the upcoming season. Historically, the Yankees don’t like sending their players to compete in these “exhibition” games if they don’t have to.
