There is a lot of uncertainty about what September holds for the Los Angeles Angels, but this much is certain: The team is going to ride its ace right-hander as much as possible.

Jered Weaver is lined up to start seven of the Angels' final 29 games this season, beginning Sunday in Seattle and possibly ending on the final day of the regular season there as well if the Angels need to win that game to make the playoffs.

"You guys know when you put together your rotation, it's in pencil," manager Mike Scioscia said of the plan. "But I think there are some things we can do with the off days. He won't have to come back on short rest at all, which I think is important.

"It's going to take more than Jered for us to reach our goal. ... If we have to adjust one way or the other, move up or back, it'll change. But he really has the maximum number of starts he can get, and he lines up for the last day, which gives us a little flexibility."

The Angels asked Weaver to pitch on short rest for the first time in his career down the stretch last season. He started on three days' rest in late August and did not pitch well in a loss in Texas. He came back on three days' rest once more in late September and beat the Baltimore Orioles.

The current plan would give Weaver two starts each against the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers and one against the wild-card-leading Oakland A's plus starts against the Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers (possibly matched up with Justin Verlander next weekend).

Weaver has been a strong finisher during his career. Though August has been his worst month (14-14 with a 4.21 ERA), he is 14-7 with a 3.25 ERA in 30 career starts after Aug. 31.

One of Weaver's rotation mates got the job done Friday. Dan Haren allowed just one unearned run in seven innings during a 9-1 win at Seattle.
