Click to enlarge The Houston Astros had a big week, not losing a game until yesterday against the Cardinals. Nobody else did much moving in this first week of May. If the Cardinals come back to earth a bit, this could be a division with a bunch of teams not too far away from .500 all year long, which is great news for the Pirates.

Lineup flexibility sparks Astros' success

HOUSTON Perhaps the move would have gone unnoticedor deemed insignificant had Astros manager Brad Mills not explicitly mentionedpregame Saturday that right fielder Brian Bogusevic was batting second. Most were focused on the absence of Jordan Schafer from the lineup, a move oflate that subsequently shifts second baseman Jose Altuve up one spot in theorder to lead off. But instead...

Biggio surprises ailing fan at Astros game

HOUSTON It seems like a lot to put on a ballplayer, asking him to mean something to a dying stranger. Craig Biggio is neither priest nor pastor, neither surgeon nor psychiatrist. He is man who got 3,000 hits, all for the Houston Astros. Which is to say he is a hero, even if he'd rather not think of it that way. "As far as being somebody's hero," he said, "...

Johnson hits 1st career slam, Astros top Cards

HOUSTON (AP) -- Astros third baseman Chris Johnson wanted badly to atone for an error that had helped the St. Louis Cardinals to an early lead Saturday night. And atone he did. Johnson hit his first grand slam in the first inning, and the Astros beat the Cardinals 8-2 behind a solid start by right-hander Bud Norris to win a fifth consecutive game for the first time since late 2010...

Wainwright proves difference in Astros' loss

HOUSTON Each day on the calendar gives birth to the possibility of another baseball clich being evoked to convey a pertinent theme. On Sunday at Minute Maid Park, the clich referencing momentum and the next day's starting pitcher was particularly timely and applicable. The Cardinals had right-hander Adam Wainwright and the Astros did not. More extensive analysis could further...

A minor league baseball team made an amazing catch on a play where two of their outfielders fell over the wall

Outfielder Austin Wates of the Corpus Christi Hooks (Houston Astros' double-A affiliate) made an absolutely incredible home run-robbing play against the San Antonio Missions (San Diego Padres' double-A affiliate) on Saturday night. What made the play even more ridiculous, was that Wates, as well as his teammate Brandon Barnes, fell over the wall as they each tried to make...

Two Corpus Christi minor leaguers fall over fence on crazy catch (Video)

Two minor leaguers combined on one of the crazier looking catches we’ve seen. The Corpus Christi Hooks, the double-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, were losing 4-0 on Saturday and six outs away from their seventh straight defeat when two of their outfielders fell over the fence tracking a ball in deep left center. Miraculously, left fielder Austin Wates made the catch. “We...

Cardinals lose third straight, fall to Astros

HOUSTON (AP) -- Astros third baseman Chris Johnson wanted badly to atone for an error that had helped the St. Louis Cardinals to an early lead Saturday night. And atone he did. Johnson hit his first grand slam in the first inning, and the Astros beat the Cardinals 8-2 behind a solid start by right-hander Bud Norris to win a fifth consecutive game for the first time since late 2010...

Minor leaguers collide midair, both go over fence, one still makes catch (video)

In one of the more amazing catches you’ll likely ever see, Austin Wates and Brandon Barnes, teammates on the Corpus Christi (Texas) Hooks of the Double-A Texas League, a minor league affiliate of the Houston Astros, both make bids to prevent a deep shot by Nathan Frieman from clearing the fence. As the two converge [...]

Astros' offense freezes vs. Marlins, Cards

HOUSTON The deferential hat tips were obligatory: first toward Cardinals right-hander Adam Wainwright on Sunday, then another directed at Marlins right-hander Carlos Zambrano on Monday night. But for an offense that had seemingly discovered its stride, the Astros' sudden futility could be described as curious if concerning felt a tad overzealous. Wainwright and Zambrano have...
