Michigan State Men’s Basketball Team: I know who I will be rooting for in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship game today. And I guarantee you it will not be the North Carolina Tar Heels.
Michigan State earned a match-up against the #1 seeded Tar Heels by defeating the #1 seeded UConn Huskies, 82-73. Tom Izzo’s Spartans certainly deserve to be in this championship, after a great tournament run that included knocking off UConn as well as the #1 overall seed, Louisville. And though I think North Carolina will win, I will be cheering for the underdog, Michigan State. Grade: A
Seattle Sounders: The Sounders won their third straight game on Saturday, defeating Toronto FC 2-0. They showed they could win away from the enthusiastic support of a Qwest Field crowd, getting a victory in the notoriously hostile environment of Toronto.
However, we did receive some bad news last week when we learned that Freddy Montero was being investigated for rape allegations. No charges have been filed, but this cannot be good news for the Sounders, who would miss their leading scorer. Let’s hope this all settles down and Montero can return to the Sounders. Grade: A-
Seattle Mariners: The Mariners get ready to kick off their season with the opener today against Minnesota. However, they will be without their star, Ichiro Suzuki, who was placed on the 15 day DL with a bleeding ulcer. Without Ichiro, Griffey may have to play more outfield than the Mariners would want. Nevertheless, the M’s should still play Junior at DH.
The Mariner’s starter on opening day will be Felix Hernandez, who will once again be attempting to have his long-awaited breakout year. And if the game requires saving, the M’s closer will be Brandon Morrow, who recently returned to the bullpen.
How well can the Mariners do this year? Don’t be expecting them to come anywhere close to the playoffs. Even in a weak West, the Ms simply aren’t good enough. Their 3-5 starters remain mediocre, and their hitting is suspect. Be prepared for a rebuilding year. Grade: C
