Fox Sports Wisconsin:
MILWAUKEE -- Rickie Weeks is walking, jogging in a pool and playing catch, but is still only 16 days removed from a sprained left ankle that was projected to keep the Milwaukee Brewers second-baseman out four-to-six weeks.
Speaking to reporters for the first time since the July 27 injury, Weeks was optimistic about his recovery.
Im ahead of schedule right now, Weeks said.
Weeks is still not able to take any batting or fielding practice. Friday was the first time since suffering the injury that Weeks has had a check-up with team doctors.
Hes really feeling good, Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said prior to the start of a three-game home series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Im surprised hes feeling this good. Its a great sign.
It was the first ankle injury in Weeks career.
I wanted to play the next day, he said.
In Weeks absence, general manager Doug Melvin acquired infielders Felipe Lopez and Jerry Hairston Jr. to help Milwaukee continue its playoff push.
The Brewers have an 11-2 record since Weeks was sent to the disabled list, but the 28-year-old All-Star hasnt seen any of it.
"I was telling the guys before, I'll be there in spirit, but Im not going to watch the games," Weeks said. "I'll watch the highlights. I know how competitive I am. I don't want to get worked up for something when I cant even play."
Weeks was selected to his first career All-Star Game this season, starting and leading off for the National League. He also participated in the Home Run Derby alongside teammate Prince Fielder.
In 104 games this season, Weeks is hitting .272 with a .346 on-base percentage, and has 19 home runs and 43 RBI.
