After some uncertainty about when the Milwaukee Brewers might activate all-star second baseman Rickie Weeks from the disabled list (ankle), it was confirmed Thursday morning that he would return for the team's four-game series with the Philadelphia Phillies. Brewers general manager Doug Melvin said during his weekly radio segment on 620 WTMJ that Weeks would be reinstated before Thursday night's game. He will initially serve as a pinch-hitter and get short stints in the field as the Brewers ease him back into action. Weeks has been sidelined since severely spraining his left ankle July 27 but has worked furiously to return as quick as possible. The first-time all-star made major strides the past few days in St. Louis, including running the bases for the first time since the injury. Manager Ron Roenicke said Wednesday he is not sure yet where Weeks might fit in the batting order once he returns to the starting lineup and wants to evaluate where Weeks is at before making any decision.
