Yesterday David Wright became the New York Mets all-time hits leader with an infield single in the 3rd inning off the Pirates’ starter Jeff Locke.  Wright added another single in the  4th inning, finishing the night with a franchise-leading 1,420 hit, passing Ed Kranepool’s longstanding club record of 1,418.

Now that he sits atop his club’s all-time hit list, Wright joins a short list of active players that can boast the same accomplishment; Derek Jeter (3,296), Todd Helton (2,420) and Michael Young (2,221) are the others.  I’ve never been a Jeter hater as a Mets fan.  In fact, I respect everything he brings to the table on the field and the way he has handled himself throughout his career in New York.  That’s also EXACTLY how I feel about David Wright.  Both players give their respective clubs a face for the franchise to lean upon and market, whether the team is playing well or poorly.

The Yankees clearly understood the value their historic shortstop brought to the club, both on and beyond the baseball diamond, when they decided to give the aging veteran a $51 million extension back in the Winter of 2010.  Al l he has done since then is continue to set new franchise marks and give Yankee fans yet a continued reason to come to the ballpark.  The Yankees may have overpaid for Jeter’s services on the field, but their was value in doing so and ownership knew it.  Soon it will be time to see if the Mets feel the same way about their all-time hits leader.
