Nick Markakis was looking like one of the best young players in baseball after the 2008 season, hitting 306/406/491 and racking up 6.3 WAR. He could do it all – hit for average, power, and play outstanding defence. The O’s wisely locked him up to a long term deal, paying him 66 million for 6 seasons. Markakis looked like a cornerstone outfielder, capable of leading the Orioles to their first successful season in years. But over the next few years, Markakis never seemed to live up to his potential. His OPS dropped in consecutive years, dropping from the 897 OPS in 08 to 801, 805 and finally 756. It’s a shocking transformation, and I wanted to look into why Markakis is no longer the dominant player he was a few years ago. The first thing that jumps out at you is the drop in power. For two straight seasons (07-08) Nick Markakis managed to post a 185 ISO. He was never an elite power hitter, but he was plenty dangerous as he hit 40+ doubles and 20+ HRs. So the most obvi...

New Orioles Hats Feature Old Bird

Hey now, the O’s debuted their new/old uniforms today: The Orioles unveiled several uniform changes for 2012 on Tuesday morning, including the cartoon bird — a revamped combination of several older versions that will be on team hats for both home and road games — and a return of the orange jersey for the first time since 1992. In all my days I’ve never heard...

Alfredo Simon Getting a Payday

Alfredo Simon was acquitted of an involuntary murder charge in the Dominican Republic. As you probably remember, Simon was accused of shooting a man during a New Year's Eve celebration about 11 months ago. At the time, I thought that was the last we would see of Simon in an Oriole uniform. Evidently, I was wrong as he appeared in 23 games for Baltimore in 2011 (including 16 starts...

Baltimore Orioles: The return of the cartoon bird

The Baltimore Orioles might not necessarily have the greatest record in the world over the past decade plus. However at least now they’ll look better win or lose. Changes to the Orioles’ uniforms were unveiled yesterday 8on orioles.com, and speaking for myself I think they look great. In effect there’s no change to the traditional home uniform, which will remain white with...

Orioles Plan to Erect Six Hall of Fame Statues in 2012

Continuing with the retro-themed offseason the Orioles started with the reintroduction of the cartoon bird, news has leaked that the team plans to erect six statues in the picnic area above the left-center field bullpen. The statues will be of their six Hall of Famers — manager Earl Weaver, pitcher Jim Palmer, first baseman Eddie Murray, third baseman Brooks Robinson, outfielder...

Wezen-Ball: New Unis Same as the Old by Larry Granillo

Growing up, I was a big Cal Ripken, Jr. fan (and, thus, a Baltimore Orioles fan). This may not be all that odd, considering how immensely popular he became in the 1990s, but there are two things worth noting: 1) I grew up in central California, far away from any other Orioles fan and 2) this was the late-1980s, when Ripken was much less of a national name and the Orioles were really...

Baltimore Orioles to Revive the Cartoon Bird.

While the Baltimore Orioles have been one of the most atrocious teams in baseball for the past decade, they are finally making a splash that is newsworthy. The Orioles have decided to bring back their legendary cartoon bird logo and the halloween-esque orange jerseys that made them famous. At least the Orioles are attempting to embrace the cartoon imagery that is placed upon...

2011 Orioles Retrospective: Vlad Guerrero

To say I was not a fan of the Vlad Guerrero signing is probably an understatement. It was pretty bad at the time, and actually managed to turn out even worse than I had expected (but he had a track-record!): Projected Actual PA 550 590 BA .291 .290 OBP .336 .317 SLG .467 .416 wOBA .346 .318 BB% 5% 3% K% 12% 9% HR 22...

Orioles Revise Uniforms; Cartoon Bird Returns

In an offseason that has already featured a facepalming general manager search and is not going to feature Prince Fielder, Albert Pujols, C.J. Wilson, or any one of relevance, the Baltimore Orioles introduced their new uniforms and reintroduced the cartoon bird, kind of like a “we’re sorry” for what has, and is going to, happen in these next three months. At 9...

The New Uniform Changes: Back to the Future?

(image from MASN Sports) Yesterday morning, the Baltimore Orioles unveiled their talked about uniform changes to the public. Overall, I like what they have done and all the jerseys include an additional patch celebrating the 20th birthday of Camden Yards. Plus, some the changes harks back to some nostalgia -- which is badly needed considering the state of the team right now. The...

Orioles bring back cartoon bird for 2012 caps

The Baltimore Orioles are going retro in 2012, bringing back the cartoon bird for their caps as part of a uniform change for the upcoming season.

Return of the Boid

The Orioles are going back to cartoon bird caps. I must admit, the Orioles cartoon bird always reminded me of Woody Woodpecker.

Orioles Look to Past for Inspiration

The Orioles are bringing back the cartoon bird logo on their hats.
