As many St. Louis Cardinals fans already know, on Friday the club unveiled a new alternate uniform to be worn on home Saturdays in 2013, modeled here by pitcher Trevor Rosenthal. The most visible change is the use of “St. Louis” in place of “Cardinals” on the jersey front, along with red piping on the jersey and matching pants. Both are an off-white color, reminiscent of the World Champion Giants’ uniforms. According to the excellent uniform database at the National Baseball Hall of Fame, the Cardinals first featured the “Birds on the Bat” in 1922, using it every year since except 1956. They introduced the piping in 1936, deploying it for two decades. “St. Louis” last appeared on jersey fronts in 1932, at that time in both home and away forms. Other jersey tweaks for 2013 include more detail in the BOTB embroidery on all three of the team’s jerseys and a reduction of the size of the numbers on the jersey front from four inches to 3 ½”.
