The Pittsbugh Pirates certainly don't seem to have a sense of urgency for a team that still has a chance to reach the postseason for the first time in 20 years.

The Pirates lost their seventh consecutive game Friday, falling 7-4 to the Cubs in Chicago at Wrigley Field. They entered the game three games behind St. Louis for the second National League wild card before losing for the 11th time in their last 13 games.

Yet the Pirates insist they are not concerned about being in the midst of a September free-fall.

"We're still in a good spot as far as making the playoffs," first baseman Garrett Jones said. "We're not losing our confidence. We're not losing our edge. I think everybody knows that it's baseball sometimes. Things aren't going to go your way all the time. We keep our heads high and our confidence up and we know we can turn things around and get on a long winning streak."

If nothing else, the law of averages suggest the Pirates are due. They are 13-27 since the beginning of August.

However, not only are the Pirates' post-season chances diminishing, but their chances of ending their streak of 19 consecutive losing seasons is getting smaller.

Friday's loss dropped the Pirates to 72-71. The Pirates need win nine of their last 19 games to get to .500 but that looks a monumental challenge with the way they are currently playing.
