It would cost a fair number of prospects. Yes, maybe Justin Smoak and a pitching prospect. Maybe even a catcher too. FoxSports.com writes about the teams that could have an interest in Halladay and includes the Rangers.
But the bigger issue would be the Rangers' ability to afford Halladay's long-term salary. Halladay is signed through 2010, so it wouldn't be just for this season. But he's making $14.25 million this season (so Rangers would have to pay the remainder of that) and $15.75 million next season.
Do you think Halladay would waive his no-trade clause to go to Texas? Normally, I'd say no. How often do pitchers waive no-trade clauses to go to Rangers Ballpark in Arlington? But if this club is within a few games of first place, I think Halladay would consider it.
I would certainly explore what it would take to get a talent like Halladay. But I am not willing to give the farm away. So if it costs a big-time pitching prospect, Smaok and a catcher, that'...
