The 2012 Cy Young Award winner is not very Cy Young-ish to start the 2013 season. And for those saying Rays pitcher David Price is just having a slow start should go and look at his track record. Price’s ERA is 6.25 with a 1-3 record in seven games. In April, he finished with a 5.21 ERA,  22 runs, six home runs, nine walks, 35 strikeouts, and hitters batted .289 against him. Why is this relevant? Because he has not had a worse month of April in his professional career for opponents production allowed. 2012 2.67 ERA, nine runs, one home run  11 walks, 23 strikeouts, .246 average allowed 2011 2.95 ERA, 18 runs, four home runs, nine walks, 30 strikeouts, .274 average allowed 2010 2.20 ERA, seven runs, two home runs, nine walks, 26 strikeouts, .202 average allowed 2009 (called up halfway through May) 3.00 ERA three runs, one home run, seven walks, 17 strikeouts, .243 average allowedFor BABIP, he allowed a good .285 in 2012. This season, he is allowing .351. His velocity is also down at 94.67 MPH when last year he averaged 96.55 MPH.Whether Price has a Cy Young hangover or he is going through a “funk,” clearly he is not the same pitcher. Last offseason, many debated whether it would be Price or James Shields the Rays would trade away. They elected to trade Shields and this year, he had a better start than last year. He’s allowing a .225 batting average and a 3.00 ERA with 39 strikeouts and one complete game. All improvements compared to last April for Shields.Could it be that Price is experiencing an injury or some sort of discomfort he is not disclosing? Perhaps it’s just a “dead arm” he has. Whatever it is, the Rays need him to return to form. It’s at the point if they place him on the disabled list it won’t be a blow to the team. They are not winning games when he pitches.
