The rosters for  this year’s Futures Game were announce on Thursday and two New York Mets prospects will be representing the team on July 8th.

Congratulations to Zack Wheeler & Wilmer Flores for being selected to participate in the Future’s Game in Kansas City next month. about 11 hours ago via webReplyRetweetFavorite @MetsFarmReport Mets Farm Report

Following in Matt Harvey‘s footsteps from a year ago is 22-year-old Zack Wheeler, who Keith Law of ESPN recently ranked the #16 overall prospect in all of baseball.  Up from #27 on his preseason list, Law had the following to say of Wheeler:

The only thing between him and potential No. 1-starterdom is just throwing more strikes. The raw stuff is there.”

The prize of the Carlos Beltran trade of a year ago has been on fire for Double-A Binghamton, going 6-3 with a 1.88 ERA on the year.

While Wheeler will be on the U.S. roster in the 14th annual Sirius XM All-Star Futures Game, his Binghamton teammate Wilmer Flores will be representing the Mets as part of the World roster.  Flores, a 20-year-old infielder, made the cut as one of five player Keith Law said he’s excited to get a first/fresh look at.

Flores — who was promoted to Double-A this week — is still young enough to be a prospect (20) and performed reasonably well in the Florida State League, although it’s his third time through the circuit, dampening some of my enthusiasm. I’d like to see if anything has changed in the body or swing to restore his old prospect status”

Wilmer earned his promotion to Binghamton after hitting .289 with 10 homers in 242 at-bats for Single-A St. Lucie.  It seems like we’ve been talking about Flores for a while and even though he seems to be a player without a position, his bat is proving to be worth the hype and it’ll be interesting to see what he can do when he goes against some of the top tier talent the minors has to offer……including Zack Wheeler.  I’d have no problem seeing the two prospects square off and am just hoping they can continue to develop the way they have throughout the year.  As far as how the rosters are chosen, according to MLB.com “Major League Baseball, along with the Major League Baseball Scouting Bureau, MLB.com, Baseball America and the 30 Major League baseball clubs, selected the 25-man rosters.”
