Heading into Saturday afternoon’s contest versus the Houston Astros, the New York Mets were 11-29 since the Alll-Star break, including 5-15 over their last 20 games and had gone a ridiculous 2-15 at home during the month of August. In desperate need of a win — to say the least –  Robert Allen Dickey proveded the club with seven strong innings, allowing just one run on five hits to pick up his 16th victory of the season, while snapping the clubs 6-game losing streak in the process:

Dickey set down the first 10 batters to start the game, before Fernando Martinez singled to right in the top of the fourth inning.  The knuckleballer over-came a one-out, bases loaded situation just one frame later, by inducing pinch hitter Steve Pearce to ground into a 6-4-3 inning-ending double play.  The Stros scored their only run of the game two innings later.  R.A. allowed the first two batters to reach base and w one-out and runners on the corners, a knuckleball skirted away from Josh Thole, allowing Scott Moore to cross the plate. Following the game, Dickey told reporters he didn’t have his best stuff, saying:

“I just didn’t feel great. Today was a particularly difficult day because it was incredibly humid. I had worked out of some jams early on. You’re not going to go out there and feel great every single time. I had a pitch count that I should have thrown a complete game, but the way I felt, it would have been selfish of me to not be honest about that.”

Really. Where would the Mets be without the knuckleballer? There is no doubt in my mind he deserves a contract extension this off-season, as Dickey is one of four (maybe five players) who I feel should have a gaurenteed spot on this roster (the others: David Wright, Matt Harvey, Ruben Tejada, Jon Niese).

Picking up his National League tying 16th victory, Dickey became the first Mets pitcher to win 16 games since Johan Santana did it in 2008, while lowering his ERA to 2.76 in the process:
