Last night, everyone in San Diego echoed that same sentiment. The series opener moved along at a leisurely pace until the ninth inning when Aroldis Chapman, Cincinnati’s fire-balling closer, entered the game to preserve a 1-0 win for Fallbrook’s Mike Leake. It wouldn’t be that easy for Chapman. Yonder Alonso put together a fantastic AB that manifested itself in a lead-off walk and then pinch hitter Chris Denorfia stepped to the plate. Norf took the first pitch he saw and deposited it over the CF wall for a 2-1 walk-off win.
The Padres improved to 49-58, 1.5 games ahead of last place San Francisco and 8.5 games behind division leading Los Angeles.
