Chicago White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski may need surgery to repair his fractured right wrist.
Pierzynski - who is on the disabled list for the first time in his career - will not know whether he needs surgery until his wrist is re-examined next week.
"In 10 days, we will have some tests on him, and then if there’s cartilage growth in that area, then it’s an indication that it’s healing," White Sox general manager Kenny Williams told the Chicago Sun-Times. "If there’s not, then it may mean he has to have surgery."
Pierzynski was hit by a pitch Friday vs. Kansas City. X-rays initially were negative, but an MRI and a CT scan revealed a hairline fracture.
Pierzynski is batting .297 with six homers and 39 RBI. He has been replaced by Tyler Flowers.
The White Sox have won nine of their last 11 games and are third in the American League Central Division, one-half game behind Cleveland and 3 1/2 behind Detroit.
