White Sox Fall Short in Series Finale vs. Tigers
David Reginek-USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago White Sox and Detroit Tigers bullpens pitched scoreless games on Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately for the White Sox, the Tigers relief corps entered the game on the right side of the score. Detroit starter Sawyer Gipson-Long allowed two runs on four hits with no walks in his MLB debut to earn the win. The Tigers scored all three of their runs off Chicago starter Jesse Scholtens in the third inning.

Despite the Tigers' three runs and five hits in the third, Scholtens performed respectably. The right-hander lasted five innings, allowing eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts. He's pitched to a 4.44 ERA this year since moving into the rotation after injuries and trades.

Zach McKinstry and Matt Vierling led off the third with singles and scored when Spencer Torkelson doubled in the following at-bat. Andy Ibanez reached on an infield single, followed by a single from Andre Lipcius that scored Torkelson. Ibanez and Lipcius advanced on Oscar Colas's throwing error. The inning ended when Ibanez was doubled off second on Parker Meadows's lineout.

Good, But Not Enough

The Pale Hose got one run back in the fourth on Eloy Jimenez's RBI double. The big knock got the Sox on the board after Andrew Benintendi tripled with one out.

Lenyn Sosa doubled and scored from third when Luis Robert Jr. beat out an infield single to cut the deficit to one in the sixth.

Bullpen Battle

Lane Ramsey relieved Scholtens in the sixth and pitched over a double by Carson Kelly. In the seventh, Gregory Santos negated a fielding error by Lenyn Sosa that allowed Torkelson to reach second base. Bryan Shaw tossed a perfect frame in the eighth to complete a stellar day for the White Sox relief crew.

However, the Tigers bullpen pitched equally as well, retiring the last 10 White Sox hitters they faced. Will Vest, Tyler Holten, Miguel Diaz, and Alex Lange held the South Siders scoreless to lock in the 3-2 win and series victory.

News and Notes

White Sox prospect Jake Eder will be sent to the team's Arizona Complex to work with the player development staff.

Yoan Moncada got the day off due to knee soreness. He is not expected to need an injured-list stint.
