Doug Fister warned his defense Friday night: Be ready because there were going to be a lot of ground-ball outs. Proving prophetic the tall right-hander needed only 88 pitches to get through eight innings. Joaquin Benoit pitched the ninth and the Tigers’ winning streak hit six with a 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox before 41109 at Comerica Park. Fister and the defense raced through the game in 2 hours 7 minutes. He wanted the complete-game victory but understood the circumstances. “I was ready for it but Benoit is the best closer we’ve got and that’s where we’re at” said Fister (10-5). “I always want to be out there. The biggest thing tonight was (Brayan) Pena was working hard behind the plate and our defense was outstanding. Just a lot of ground balls that they picked up and made plays on.” Manager Jim Leyland said he would have considered sending Fister out in the ninth if the bottom of the order had been due up. “They started centering the ball on him a little bit” Leyland said. “He did a terrific job obviously. He pitched a great game.” After running in pregame warm-ups third baseman Miguel Cabrera took himself out of the lineup. Leyland didn’t know his status for tonight. Friday’s game was the seventh that the reigning MVP missed this season.
