Could we finally see Andy Oliver on Saturday? Now it’s time for what seems like a weekly feature on the site: “Who could start for the Pirates on (Insert Day) with the recent injury to (Insert Pitcher Who is Injured)”. Today we fill in those blanks with Saturday, and A.J. Burnett. Burnett will miss his next start with a calf injury, causing Jeff Locke to move up a day to pitch on Friday, and leaving no options on Saturday. Gerrit Cole and Francisco Liriano would both be pitching on less than five days rest on Saturday. Therefore, here are the options in the minors and the bullpen. Gerrit Cole - Call. Him. Up! Wait, they did that. Sorry, Cole was just number one in the template for this article. Andy Oliver - He’s scheduled to start for Indianapolis on Friday. Oliver has had some serious control issues in Triple-A, but is having a very Justin Wilson-like season with a low BAA and a high strikeout rate. He wouldn’t be the worst option, while keeping him on a short leash and waiting to...

In his first major league start of what should be a career to track, Gerrit Cole looked every bit the part of first overall draft pick (2011) for the Pittsburgh Pirates.  And not just against any old team, but against the defending World Series Champion San Francisco Giants, against 2-time Cy Young Award winner and 4-time All Star Tim Lincecum.  And his girlfriend’s brother happens...

The Friday Infodump

I've been accumulating share-worthy Gerrit Cole links for a couple of days now, so let's get that out of the way along with a few newsworthy stories.  At FanGraphs, Jeff Sullivan took a look at one of Cole's innings and his pitch placement vs. where Russell Martin set up for him. It's interesting, and his point about command vs. control is an important one to...

Pittsburgh Pirates vs. San Francisco Giants – Game 65

So Gerrit Cole, right?  Good outing, definitely something to build on.  It appears he is going to do everything he can to stay on this team, which is great.  There is really no need for Jeanmar Gomez to ever make another start for the Pirates. This is a pretty huge revelation. Hurdle also said that…

First Pitch: The Important Lower Tiers in the Prospect Rankings

For the last few years we’ve been hearing the same thing over and over about the Pittsburgh Pirates’ farm system. They’re very top-heavy, but the system lacks depth.
